Road Trip From Orlando to New York

Hi everyone. I am back, after gaining lots of tips and advise from all you lovely folk when I planned my road trip across California(which was amazing and thoroughly enjoyed by myself and family). I'm planning an east coast road trip next summer and thought I would put the feelers out for some forward planning. Any advise greatly appreciated. I'm travelling with Hubby and 14 year old son. planning to fly into Orlando and travel up to fly home from New York over 2 weeks. Thanks in advance :)

You don't need a rental car anywhere between Washington DC and NYC. Take the train or bus out of Washington if all you want to see is the cities.
I take it that you have no drop off fee since you are coming in with a rental agreement from your home country.
Driving into the big cities and paying for parking is stressful and expensive.

Hi Bramspam! I'm sure you will get lots of ideas on what to see and do over your 2 week road trip. If you have never visited Charleston SC, you should look into this beautiful city full of history! Also, the NC Outer Banks are beautiful and some parts still very remote and peaceful

What do you all like to do?

In Florida, you could take a trip east to the Kennedy Space Center.

Savannah, GA and Charleston, SC are lovely cities.

If you go inland, Atlanta has the CNN Center, aquarium, and Coca-Cola World.

Colonial Williamsburg...and your son would like Busch Gardens there I would think.

There are some great beaches all up the coast.

From DC I would go right to NYC...although if you are interested in history, stop in Philly.

Two weeks is very little to cover all that territory. You need at least 4 days each in NY and DC (well, I think more - but that is minimum) leaving not much time for FL and all the territory in between. (Not that south of DC isn;t great - there are a huge number of things to see and do - really 4 weeks is more realistic for this trip.) If you want to spend several days in orlando for the parks - that really gives you only a couple of days to trek from there to DC.

And agree that a car is worse than useless in DC and NYC. You wold be paying fo rthe daily rental and insurance plus $30 to $40 per night to garage it - and then pay for public transit to get around during the day (city parking is just not viable).

Also - they need to understand that in summer south of DC is VERY hot - think upper 90s and humid every day. Many snowbirds that retire to FL come back north every year from June through Sept - since in FL you really can't go outside that time of year.

Thanks tomfuller for tip on train from DC to NY. Sounds a nice relaxing option.
Dandy93 I'll defo stop at charleston.
We've visited Florida a few times so not plannng staying there too long. I think Kennedy space centre
and possibly MGM are of interest. Then head upwards. Thanks to rizzo0904 for list of things to look up. And nytraveler.
Gives me something to start with. We have to travel July as my son is in school.
All great advise thanks folks

You can also consider Amtrak's Auto train.

Sanford, just outside of Orlando to Lorton, VA, just few minutes drive south of DC. Unless you want to see the east coast along the way, that's the best option. It's a 17.5 hour overnight trip with your car in the back. I have to admit that's more like 22-24 hours total with the car check-in and getting it back at the destination, but you do get sit down restaurant service, dinner, breakfast and wine included in the fare.
