Road trip from Adare to Doolin
I was looking at the map and noticed that I could take a ferry with my car from Tarbert and drive on to Doolin. How long will it take? There are several options for roads. I want a scenic route by also I would like one of the faster roads. I do not always have to be driving by the ocean. What route would you suggest?

Try www.aaroadwatch.ie for their Route Planner. Take the 'Total Miles Driven' number and divide by 30. Their times are NOTORIOUSLY INACCURRATE.
Unless it is a daily commute for you, or you have no soul, you WILL find yourself slowing down to enjoy the scenery and/or stopping to snap a few quick pictures, so the 30-35 MPH rule tends to be pretty close. Most direct route would be Killimer to Kilrush to Quilty and on, although the routing through Kilkee is on a SLIGHTLY better road. aaroadwatch says: Travel (Km) and then to take total (Km) 0.0 Start out at Killimer Ferry/Pier,Clare Uncl. 0.0 0.1 Turn right onto the R486 (signposted Ennis) R486 0.1 0.1 Turn left onto Burrane Lower Uncl. 0.2 0.9 Bear right onto Teervarna Uncl. 1.1 0.1 Bear right onto Burrane Upper Uncl. 1.3 0.4 Bear left onto Dunneill Uncl. 1.6 1.7 Continue forward onto Derrylough Uncl. 3.3 1.3 Continue forward onto Knockerry West Uncl. 4.6 1.7 Continue forward onto Garraunnatooha Uncl. 6.2 0.3 Continue forward onto Tullagower Uncl. 6.5 1.1 Continue forward onto Gowerhass Uncl. 7.5 0.8 Continue forward onto Brisla West Uncl. 8.4 1.4 Continue forward onto Teernagloghane Uncl. 9.7 0.9 Continue forward Entering Carhue (cooraclare) Uncl. 10.7 0.0 Turn right onto the R483 R483 10.7 5.2 Continue forward onto the R483 Entering Creegh R483 15.9 4.8 At T-junction turn right onto the N67 N67 20.7 9.0 Continue forward onto Spanish Point Road - N67 Entering Miltown Malbay N67 29.7 4.8 Continue forward onto the N67 Entering Rinneen N67 34.5 7.1 Continue forward onto Miltown Malbay Road - N67 Entering Lahinch N67 41.6 0.6 Turn left onto Liscannor Road - R478 R478 42.1 4.5 Bear right onto Main Street - R478 Entering Liscannor R478 46.6 6.0 Finish at Cliffs of Moher,Clare R478 52.6 So, 52.6 miles should take between 1.5 and 1.75 hours, once you are OFF the ferry. Be sure when you use roadwatch you actually break up your journey for the ferry or it will route you around.
I personally like to do each stop to stop of the journey on roadwatch, less confusing and an acomplishment to finish a page! TO: Doolin From: Adare via: Tarbert Ferry via: Kilimer Ferry I.C. -yeah, we went through Kilkee on our route and it was 2 hours to the Cliffs and I think 20ish minutes to Doolin from there...the sun was setting and I was too enthralled with the views to be sure. There's a lot to see not too far off that itinerary: a stop at Dromoland Castle for tea (in the garden); Greg Norman's Doonberg Golf links (if you're into that sort of thing); the Armada Hotel on Spanish Point if you are there during a Willie Clancy memorial summer scoile (around the 4th of July).
Lahinch is worth a stop: our last trip (end of Feb., first of Mar.) the Irish Tourist Board shop at the top of the Main street in Lahinch, they had 30% off 'Across the Board.' You can go inland Lahinch-Ennistymon or you can go via the Cliffs of Moher. As I recall from several trips to that area, traffic is very light |
