Road Trip form Portland to Acadia-What should I see?

I've got a week in Maine (in May), starting in Portland, and already decided to spend it going up to Acadia National Park and back. I know to drive route 1 on the way there, but I would like to see more than just the coast, maybe just a little of something inland. I have no set plans and am open to any and all suggestions. Thanks!

I'm not sure that an inland route would be anything other than miles and miles of trees. The drive from Portland to Acadia only takes about half a day. We usually only stop in Freeport for L.L. Bean and Ben & Jerry's. There are certainly plenty of scenic towns to explore along the way, but we like to spend our time hiking in Acadia.

I agree with Liz; except for the huge lakes, there's not much to see in inland Maine. Stick to the coast.

If you take the coastal route, spend a night in Camden. It's beautiful as well with some great B&B's and excellent restaurants. Look for the belted cows - aka as Oreo cookie cows; honestly! Also suggest Southwest Harbor while in Acadia - very laid back, not touristy at all.

hi, we meandered down rte. 24 and took it south all the way until it ended at bailey's island. there was a cribstone bridge that's supposed to be an engineering marvel, but that's not why we went there... the view from the "land's end" was beautiful.
maybe you can also go lighthouse chasing along the way as well. probably would have done that more if we had the time.
you can see my maine vacation pix & travelogue at
www.mindspring.com/~quimbymoy/maine.html
