Road trip - early October - to see southern plantations
 

Just starting to research this. Would love to see the Old South, visit some plantations. Suggestions?

From what city or town will you be coming from? That would help in planning a plantation trip. The New Orleans to Baton Rouge area, the river road is a beautiful area where you can tour plantations. Thomasville, Georgia is another area. Madison , Georgia has many beautiful old homes. They are scattered throughout the south. How long a trip are you planning. Provide us with more details and we will try to help. Many tours of plantations in the south are held in the spring when the flowers are in bloom.

The timing for your road trip is excellent for you should be able to obtain entrance to many Antebellum homes during fall pilgrimages throughout the south. Natchez MS has a great selection of homes on tour and I would recommend including it in your itinerary. Many old South areas have Antebellum (not sure of the spelling)tours. October has warm days cool nights down here. In New Orleans you can visit plantations for dinners, ie Elmwood Plantation. If NO is your choice, there is one street in the city that if you drive down at night the light play of the headlights on the cut glass windows is incredible. You can also take a dinner cruise on a paddle wheel boat.

Do you mean Elmwood Plantation near NO? We used to eat there for anniversaries & loved it. They had a fire many years ago & it was in limbo. Now they are developing the property for homesites. We also used to eat at another plantation on the WestBank of NO but they no longer do that either. I would suggest having lunch at Oak Alley Plantation.
