Road trip: Asheville and Charleston
 

Hi!
Thinking about a trip to Charleston and beaches beyond returning through Asheville, N.C. for a few days. We live in St. Louis. Thoughts on lodging in these areas? Suggestions of route? We love to stay in unique and off the beaten path lodging. Love seclusion and scenic spots. Hate the Holiday Inn kind of thing....

Sounds like you have a great trip planned. There are many unique and interesting lodging options in both cities. It will be easier to offer suggestions if you would include your budget and any special interests.

On a general note I would probably opt for B & B's in both places you have chosen. However, depending on the time of year, budget, etc. that may, or may not be your best option.

Thanks for your responses and questions. First of all,
I must mention we are a family of five - three teenagers. We have a fairly good budget and the lodging experience is important to me. Part of the whole experience and that is why I like to seek out unusual and beautiful surroundings - not the typical hotel.
As for special interests - hiking, shopping, great dining. We like beautiful scenery - lakes, rivers, national parks,etc... History is great! With five of us we have lots of varied interests, thus Charleston and Asheville seem a perfect choice.

And how long a trip? Time in each city? You have chosen two garden spots.
There are a lot of threads about both places and one recently recommended some nice B&Bs in charleston. The Vendue Inn is a nice place in Charleston also.I think they often have specials during the week, if that suits your schedule.

In that case I would explore www.vrbo.com as there are a myriad of cabin choices in the Mts. Not sure when you are traveling but that would be your best option for the group you have in tow. You may also want to look around teh Black Mt./Swannanoa area, near Asheville and very near the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Also, we would like to do a little beach time while visiting Charleston. Should we base ourselves on the beach and go in for sightseeing? Would not want to drive terribly far. Maybe Isle of Palms?

May actually be easier to do it the other way, as parking downtown can be difficult. If you plan on more than 3 days I would likely opt for a beach location, if less, I'd stay in town. You'll want to visit one of the Plantations as well.

Where you stay also depends on when you are going....If you are planning to go in June or July, most beach rentals have a 7 night minimum.

Charleston
1. Take a Gullah tour in Charleston. Unique view of the Holy city.
2. Try the Ansonborough Inn

4. Ride bikes on Isle of Palms
5. Read Mrs. Whaley's Charleston Gardens before you go. Great insights into the very unusual social structure.
6. Sunset on the rooftop of the Vendue Inn.
Asheville
1.Stay at The Red Rocker Inn in Black Mountain, NC
2. Have lunch at the Stoney Knob Cafe or Welbread Cafe in Weaverville.
3. Go downtown to Asheville on a Friday night. Tons of music happening there!
