Help - road trip from Munich to Bruges
Hi everyone,
As part of our honeymoon in Europe, my husband and I would like to do a road trip from Munich to Bruges. We are planning on spending about a week in Germany, starting in Munich on September 30, 2014 (we have to fly into Munich as part of our prebooked itinerary). We were thinking of spending about 2-3 days in Munich checking out Oktoberfest and the city itself. We would like to see Dachau as well (we are interested in WWII history). From there we were thinking of renting a car and driving for the next few days to reach Belgium around the end of the week. Then we will spend about a week in Belgium (we are interested in Bruges and visiting some Flemish towns). Neither of us have been to Germany or Belgium before. Any advice on how to plan our road trip and which towns to stop in? I was wondering about the romantic road and the Rhine valley, but any suggestions are welcome! We are both in our early thirties. |
I would probably start by finding some good maps; Via Michelin is also a good website because it plans your journey and it allows you to select a scenic route (discovery route).
The Romantic Road is not itself attractive; rather, it connects a number of very scenic towns. But I would think very roughly a good pathway would be via some of these towns (let's say Neuschwanstein, Rothenburg, Würzburg), up to the Rhine Valley (where you could make one or two stops (say Bacharach), but the path is scenic), connecting in with the Mosel at Koblenz (again a scenic route - stop in say Traben-Trarbach or Cochem), down to Trier, across to Luxembourg City and then up to Liège, Leuven, Brussels. From Brussels either do day trips to Gent, Antwerp, Brugge, Ieper OR base yourself in Gent and do trips from there. I note that you are doing a road trip, not a city hop, but unless you do flying visits to most of these places there possibly are a few too many destinations, so focus on refining some of these. Fly into Munich and out of Brussels to make your life easier! Lavandula |
