Family summer road trip - Great lakes
 

Hi !


we are looking to do a road trip next summer at the end of july and vegining of august . we have 14-18 days for that road trip. here,s our situation:
-We are from Montreal
- We have 2 kids (6 and 10)
- we want a mix of cities, museums, outdoors and attractions parks.
- we want to include Chicaco and cedar point in our trip.

What do you think of

1) Mtl to Syracuse (sleep in Syracuse)
2) Syracuse to Sandusky (cedar Point) : stop between ?
3) Stops between Sandusky and Chicago ?
4) Chicago for 4 nights (Industry museum, walking in the city , Cubs game)
5) Explore the Michigan region and cross back to Canada via Sault-Sainte-marie
6) Stop in Toronto to see some friends
7)Toronto-Montreal

If you stretch the first day to Seneca Falls or Canandaigua it will make reaching Cedar Point a little easier. If you want to put a stop in between Cedar Point and Chicago, try going up into Michigan to Ypsalanti or Ann Arbor.
I-94 will avoid a long stretch on the toll road. While in Chicago, see the Field Museum (including Sue), the Shedd Aquarium and maybe the Art Museum.
On the lake Michigan side try for Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

On your initial drive, head from Montreal to Saratoga Springs... then pick up New York Route 20 near Albany and head West for an amazing drive across the top of the Finger Lakes. There are several resort towns to stop and also consider Letchworth State Park, known as "the Grand Canyon of the East ".

You don't mention Niagara Falls, but it's an easy stop... then head from Niagara to Cedar Point... then Chicago. .. you could also catch Niagara on your return leg to Toronto. .. have fun

I don't know who called Letchworth the Grand Canyon of the east. I do know that the Pine Creek Gorge in Tioga County PA is Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon. The man that named it that was my high school history teacher.

Northern Indiana has a large Amish population that some people find interesting to visit. It is southeast of South Bend. July/August is Blueberry season. If you have timed it right, you can stop and pick your own blueberries (Indiana/Michigan boarder near Michigan City). If you are into beaches, the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is on Lake Michigan near Porter Indiana

Actually, Sue won’t be back on display until next year. She’s being moved from the main hall to her own exhibit upstairs. In her place will be a replica of a titanosaurus. That said, I still recommend The Field Museum as well as the Shedd, the planetarium and the Art Institute. Especially the Art Institute.
