Cross country road trip -- Looking for advice!!

I am traveling from Norfolk, VA to San Diego for a military move. I am driving cross country and have planned the following stops. I am looking for advice on my route -- what you think about it, stuff I may not be thinking about, or things I should do/see along the way. The stops I am going to make are:

Norfolk, VA

Kingston, TN

Clarkesville, AR

Tucumcari, AZ

Tusayan, AZ ( to spend a day at teh Grand Canyon

Williams, AZ

San Diego

I planned out each stop so it would be in the area of 9 hours a day. I am making the trip alone so don't want to be driving too much each day. Thanks for your help!

Tucumcari is in NM. There isn't a lot there:

Try to make it as far as Santa Rosa. Depending on how long you spend at the Grand Canyon you could make it as far as Kingman.
Think about taking US 93 over Hoover Dam and through Las Vegas.

We did a similar trip a few years back, except left from Indiana. We stopped in Springfield,Missouri, really pretty and of course the Big Bass Pro Shop. On to Oklahoma City, little river walk, baseball stadium but missed the memorial to the Oklahoma city bombings wish we would've seen it. Crossing Texas takes forward, saw the largest McDonalds, really boring drive. Stopped in Santa Fe with a side trip to Taos and river rafted there. On to Winslow AZ, small then to Yuma and San Diego! We didn't get to stop at Grand Canyon but when I was a little girl we stopped at the cliff house dwellings at Mesa Verde, amazing National Park. Have fun!

As you get further west you may want to drive a bit further because it is really boring, and you "can" drive pretty fast. You also will be gaining daylight hours as you change time zones. So you might be able to choose some other "destinations" for a bit of sightseeeing. Get some books on tape!!
