calgary to whitehorse road trip
 

hi guys,thinking of doing a road trip from Calgary to Whitehorse , then do the golden circle route and end up back in Calgary...the question is,..is 2 weeks long enough, and do I need to book accomadation or can I just rock up and find a place to stay when I want....thanks

Haven't done this myself, but curious - when are you planning to do this?

A lot of the road going up that way is very remote, with few towns, and not that many options for accommodations. Its not at all like, say, the Blue Ridge Parkway, or I-75. However, June is a bit of a shoulder season. If you were camping, I'd say no problem, but otherwise, you'd better think about booking rooms, rather than taking chances.
One time we got to Dawson City, had a room, but every room in town was booked. 3 Swiss girls were delighted to sleep in the back of our pickup (it had a cap), even though we offered to let them have our room! This was in early September.

Most of this trip will be just you, the road you're on, and a THICK forest all around. There will be awesome sights and plenty of natural beauty. A drawback to the path, for those looking for hotel rooms, is that the path isn't like most others in North America, where there are motels dotting every wide spot on the roadway.

It makes sense to strategize between various lodging spots perhaps 250-300 mile apart, along the way. I loved most of the trip along the Alaska Highway, but I went in early April when I'd drive for 9 hours on a given day while seeing just 7 cars heading in my direction the whole while. I'm wildly guessing that two weeks will be long enough. I drove 2000 miles in 3 days to get from Anchorage to Calgary on my return trip - and the roadside scenery looked quite 'new' and different for my merely being on the opposite side of the road and looking in the opposite direction.
