Basel to Salzburg Road Trip
 

Looking for recommendations for a scenic drive from Basel to Salzburg. Would you recommend a route through the Alps or Black Forest? Or possibly another route?
Also interested in one or two stops along the way, maybe a scenic lunch spot.

Going through the Black Forest is not a direct route since the area is directly north of Basel. The same goes for the high Alps in Switzerland. It all depends on how much time you have. Generally if looking for a scenic drive, avoid the super highways and it will be scenic even in the lowlands outside urban conglomerations. If you have the time I would recommend going to Andermatt and then down the upper Rhine valley to Lichtenstein, on on through Austria. You might want to go straight east until Austria and take the Silvretta Hochstraße if you want to experience the high Alps. That's a minimal detour.
