Austria to Itlay road trip

Hello! My family and I will be taking a driving road trip from Maria Alm, Austria to Venice, Italy. We are visiting family in Austria but would like to add in an adventure of our own.

My question is: what is the best site to build the road trip (site seeing along the way) and does anyone have suggestions for tolls and etc. We are renting a car and will have a GPS.

thank you!

While I can not suggest any "best sites" to help with your road trip, I can offer two routes we have taken that might be of interest, depending on your time schedule.

1. (Vienna)-Innsbruck (with a visit to Hall in Tirol)-Bolzano-Trento-Verona-Venice. Tirol is our favorite state in Austria, and the northern part of Italy is equally as enjoyable for the villages, food, and wine. We spent five days on this holiday. Padova might also be a stop.

2. (Vienna) to Wörthersee, with a stay at one of the lakeside hotels, and then head to Venice. From our two night base in Wörthersee we took a day trip to Bled.

In Austria (and Slovenia) a vignette is required. In Italy there will be toll booths along the autobahn that accept credit cards and cash.

I hope this is helpful. Happy Planning.

Hi,

To me, this is easy:

Head to Zell am See and over the spectacular Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse to Lienz and then into the Dolomites, just west of Cortina d'Ampezzo. Spend a few days in the Dolomites. Spectacular scenery, cable car trips, hikes, walks, a half dozen "Dolomite Passes" which are amazing drives themselves, then add the best of Austrian and Italian cuisine, and what's not to love?

Also add a visit to Bolzano and the "Ice Man" exhibit at the Museum of Archaeology, before heading to Venice.

Just an FYI:
We stayed twice at: www.montanara.it
Once at :www.garniaristion.com

And have had this recommended by friends: www.tamarindo-lavilla.it/

The Tamarindo is next door to the Montanara. They are owned by brothers.

Ditto everything pja1 said, except we've stayed in different lodging.

If your family enjoys historical sights as well as scenery, there are many WWI sights and museums in the area mentioned by pja1.
