Atlanta to So. Vermont in December - best route?

We are considering driving up to VT for the holidays. However, we would like to avoid major cities, traffic delays, etc. What is the best route without also needing a four wheel drive vehicle? We would like to do it in two days, so would stop for the night in a hotel, but not planning on doing any site-seeing on the way. All the travel sites seem to just give us the I-95 route which seems crazy - going through all the major cities up the coast. Any ideas? Thanks!

It is about 1000 miles from Atlanta to South Vermont. At Interstate speed it is about 16 hours of driving without breaks.
State highways have lower speed limits so it would take longer.

Interstates, for the most part, have city bypasses, better services, snow clearing etc. To miss most of the traffic start your drive early and stop for the night early. Leave at 05:30 and you can make it around DC without problems.

You don't need a four-wheel drive, but don't be one of those morons driving with low-profile tires and spinning wheel covers trying to push a car through 1/4" of snow while wearing sneakers with dragging shoe laces and cut-off sweat pants either.

Consider the 81 if you don't like the 95.
