You don't need to go back to the airport to drop off the car. Look into returning it in Manhattan. Look for a location close to your hotel. If the price is close then it's a better option. Getting to JFK, especially if there is traffic can be a pain.

It is hard to know what things would interest you and your parents on the New England portion of the trip. If you are in the Brattleboro area you will be to the east of the Green Mountains along the Connecticut River. Here is a link to information about southern VT. The Byways section describes some scenic rides You will also be just to the north of the Pioneer Valley and Berkshires of western MA. Here is a link for that area.

Late comment. If the plan is not yet set, start north and travel south. Depending on how you plan
Rte 169 between North Woodstock, CT, and Lisbon, CT is scenic. In Western CT, Litchfield Hills may still have some foliage Northern Litchfield Hills goes Winsted, CT to Lakeville, CT on Rte 44. At Lakeville, CT, turn to Rte 41 to Sharon, CT. From Sharon, CT, take Rte 4 to Cornwall Junction, CT Southern Litchfield Hill goes Cornwall Bridge to Goshen on Rte 4. Then Rte 63 to Litchfield, 202 to New Milford and then jump on Rte 7 towards Kent till Rte 55 to jump on Rte 22, or Cornwell Bridge to Kent to Rte 55. Continue to Rte 22 until Brewster, NY then jump onto I-684 to White Plains, NY. After that take whichever road you feel like to NYC. Serious concrete jungle starts after that. |
