Which airport should I fly in to Costa Rica, and why?

If you don't already have a reason for choosing one over another, such as proximity to where you want to be when you get there, pick the one that has cheaper flights from wherever you are coming from. Or am I missing the point of your question?

Liberia is easier to fly into if you are going to be staying in Guanacaste in northern Pacific beach areas, Tamarindo or going to Monteverde, Tenorio, etc.
SJO offers easier access to Arenal, Manuel Antonio, Tortuguero, Puerto Viejo plus quick access to the domestic flights south to the Osa Peninsula.
It all depends on where you plan to stay.

That is actually exactly what I was asking. We're not sure exactly what where all we want to go yet in Costa Rica, we just know we'd like to take our honeymoon there, and probably stay in the Central part and the Pacific Coast. So I'm trying to figure out which airport is better to fly into in terms of proximity to the best national parks or beaches, quality of roads leading from each airport (in case we need to rent a car), etc.

If your plan is based within the Central Area and Pacific Coast, it would advise you to fly to SJO, it would be easier to transport from here and the airfares are usually cheaper than in LIR. People that choose LIR as the landing airport are usually visiting the areas colibri named. But definitely I would say your best bet is SJO.

I don't where you're flying from or when, BUT Continental is having a huge price break right now on non-stop flights from Newark to Liberia for many dates next year. I just snagged tickets for next May for $284 r/t, all fees/taxes included. Pretty much unheard of. Just thought I'd mention it in case you can take advantage.

Personally I always fly into SJO spirit.com jetblue.com aa.com
awesome deals first class for the price of coach on Spirit
more central cheaper car rentals usually on sericecarrental.com.
Can pick up arenal.net and monteverdeinfo.com on my way to
Guanacaste.... If you are just going to Nicoya LIR makes sense
otherwise if I cost it out usually not...My travel style is
more of a road tripping style though....

Liberia is closer to the Guanacaste beaches, so if this is where you are vacationing, it would be the best choice.

If Guanacaste region is part of the itinerary, then makes sense to fly into OR out of Liberia. Otherwise, San Jose is better choice. Also, when planning itinerary be aware of option to fly within country (small planes!) .... and/or if renting a car, allow sufficient time to get to your next destination before sunset (around 6:00 pm).

First congrats on your engagement! We spent our honeymoon in Costa Rica 14 years ago and absolutely loved it. Flying into Liberia is much easier and they are going to be opening up a new terminal before you arrive. I'd recommend staying in Guanacaste for at least a portion of your honeymoon. Tamarindo is a great city with good food, nightlife, and places to stay. Best wishes to the both of you.
