I have a similar question, but also will there be any restaurants open on Christmas day in La Fortuna? We will be staying at Arenal Paraiso, how is the restaurant there for lunches & dinners? How are their prices? Just wondering about our meal options on Christmas day. Thanks!

We enjoyed our dinner at El Novillo (open air with a great volcano view; typical Costa Rican food, very tasty). The restaurant at Arenal Paraiso was not that great for dinner (although they serve a very good breakfast).

Agree the Arenal Paraiso is good for breakfast, but not that great for other meals. We found it to be expensive for what we ordered-one of our most expensive meals on our trip. We did not have a car so we were limited in our choice for the 2 days.

We ate at the Lucky Bug gallery/restaurant in Nuevo Arenal last Christmas. It was a funky place and the food was good. We bought lots of little gifts at the gallery as Christmas presents. (All is Costa Rican made). Two other good places to eat in Nuevo Arenal are Tom's bakery and the pizza place (can't remember the name).

We were at Arenal Paraiso in January. The restaurant for dinner was hit and miss. We were lucky with what we ordered, but others found their meals so-so. Discussing the restaurant around the pool with other guests, it seems the restaurant does some dishes very well, others--eh.

I agree that the AP food was hit or miss. The fish dishes (tilapia, sea bass) were the best for us.
Other restaurants we enjoyed were El Jardin and Lava Rocks in La Fortuna. We also ate at a steakhouse call El Mirador ..... something. It also has a nice view of the volcano. Good food, but pricier than El Novillo. We were headed to El Novillo, but it was pouring and chilly, so we opted for an indoor place. El Novillo consists of plastic tables & chairs under a corrugated canopy. I'm sure it is great on a nice evening.

The best place to eat in La Fortuna is Restaurante Nene, which is on the east side of the town center. Look for the sign pointing down an alley. Excellent and reasonably priced. You can't beat it in this area.
For inexpensive casados (blue plate specials), I recommend Soda El Rio, one block south of the main drag.
