vacationing in Costa Rica

My wife and I and going to be vacationing for 2 weeks in Costa Rica starting the last week in June. We are looking for any suggestions on what to see and do and any reasonable price places to stay. We are both very fit and active and truly enjoy hiking and seeing nature. We have been told that its best to rent a 4 x 4 since we plan on traveling a good deal of the country. We would love to get to spend some time getting to know the people there but arent very fluent with Spanish. Our hope is to get to know the people and country and after a 3 or so visits retire there on a temporary basis and permanent if all goes well. Any suggestions that would be helpful for our trip would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I think general questions like these can be very challenging. A good search on trip reports can be a fun way to start with your research and then you can come back and ask more specific questions. Some other words to search:

Central Valley
Arenal
Poas Volcano
Osa Peninsula
Guanacaste beaches

And not knowing your budget, some hotels to search:

Villa Bonita
Orquideas Inn
Finca Rosa Blanca
Xandari
(all near airport)

Arenal Paraiso
Arenal Springs resort
Arenal Kioro
Lost Iguana
(all near Arenal)

Bosque del Cabo
Lapa Rios
(Osa Peninsula)

Thanks for the advice Coolbluewater, i have been doing that and reading as much as possible and due to the lack of time i m trying to get any advice that would be useful. I am hoping that i might get a suggestion or two of places that most people dont visit that are really good to see. also any B & B that a Tico family runs so we can get to know of what the people are like. Thanks, Bill

The generality of your request was a bit of a problem!

You've already been given excellent advice by coolbluewater, who knows her stuff as well. I'm just curious. Is this your first visit? It sounds as if it is. Your screenname sounds as if you know the country well and really like it!

I never quite know how to respond to someone who has plans to move to another country, yet hasn't gotten to know it extremely well. Living in Costa Rica would be quite a culture shock, as would any move to Central America or anywhere else outside the U.S. or Canada. I would think that it would be necessary to spend several months getting familiar with life somewhere else before you'd have any idea of whether it's a fit for you.

All I know is that after 3 visits, we weren't thinking along those lines. Now after 11 or 12 visits for extended period of time, we began thinking we could handle life in Costa Rica--at least part of the year. But that's not something you can get a handle on in 3 visits, unless they are pretty lengthy. Many people try and then find out after a lot of expense that it wasn't quite the experience they thought it was going to be.

Just something to think about. You might want to approach a decision like that with a bit more trepidation!
