There's an article in the current issue of National Geographic Traveler Magazine (not the yellow-bordered National Geographic) about Uruguay. We were there about 12 years ago, so my info is not current. Punta del Este itself is quite built up. Beaches to the north and south are more appealing to me. Make sure you speak adequate Spanish. Not a lot of English is spoken. When are you going? We were there in February, and because of unexpected cool weather, the ocean was a little cold for swimming. But I understand it's quite swimmable most summers.

Ron, although P del Este may be a bit build up downtown, but you are not staying there. You should check La Barra de Maldonado, or even better, José Ignacio, both areas close enough to downtown, but far enough to grant you isolation. I hope you are not going in January (the very season). But be aware that the sea in Uruguay is not Caribbean.

Enjoy your honeymoon!

Is the water clean and swimmable? Do you think we will be very dissappointed by the beaches?

Ron,
The water is absolutely clean and swimmable, and you will NOT be dissappointed by the beaches. Many europeans spend their vacations in Punta del Este. What I mean is that the sea is blue instead of the turquoise of the Caribbean, and the sand is rather beige than white, and there are no palm trees. But beaches are very beautiful, and the towns are gorgeous.
