Traveling alone in Mexico DF/Taxco
After my friend suddenly backed out of our trip to Mexico, I face either cancelling or going by myself. I have visited Mexico DF and Taxco before and know the safety concerns. I've lived in Ecuador and have traveled by myself all over the world. Should I continue planning this trip or cancel it? I've thought of perhaps taking an escorted tour package to lessen the risks. Any good travel companies? Any thoughts on a woman traveling by herself? Any help is appreciated!

I'm assuming if you have lived in Ecuador you speak Spanish and know the ropes. I don't think that traveling to Taxco via first class bus, maybe stopping in Cuernavca too would be any big deal at all. As far as Mexico City, it facinates me but also makes me nervous. As a male I do travel around town by myself, but I am very careful. If you go there you would certainly want to obery all the precautions people comment about here frequently. If you are just flying into El D.F. and have not put money down on other arrangements how about heading down to Oaxaca City? I have met numerous women traveling alone there that are having the time of their life. In more than ten years I have never met any that have had a bad experience. To get there you can take the bus to Puebla from the airport in El D.F. then on to Oaxaca, or spend a day or two in Puebla. You can bus back to the airport the same way on your return. Using this method you don't even have to go to the bus station en El D.F. Personally I would rather go to Oaxaca than Taxco anyway. Just my thoughts , I hope you have agreat trip whatever you do.

Dude, you are the man! Such a wealth of knowledge - I will definitely look into Puebla and Oaxaca.
My flight into DF lands about 9:30 PM. Not knowing the distance to Puebla, I am thinking I should stay one night in DF? Any cheap hotels near the airport you would recommend? I found the Hiton and Marriott, but they are pretty expensive.
Thanks, LB

Leslie don't know the name of the bus company to Puebla, but if you go from the international terminal to the national terminal just walk along until you see them. They leave hourly during the day (not sure when the service stops for the night) and go to "CAPU" Central de Autobuses Puebla. You can also get bus info. from "ticketbus.com.mx" and "uno.com.mx." Scar I have only stayed in the hotel directly connected to the airport via walkway- not sure which of the two you mention it was, but it was pricey. Have also stayed at the Majestic which is a ways from the airport on the Zocalo. Folks have told me the "Hotel Aeropuerto" is inexpensive and o.k. Have seen it from the outside, it is located about 200 yards down the steet from the national part of the terminal. Even for that short distance I would want to take a secure taxi from the airport- unless the hotel has transportation. Another option would be to take a secure taxi from the airport to the Mexico City "Tapo" terminal and take an overnight bus to Oaxaca. "UNO" is the best way to go. These are super luxury buses. ADO GL would be the next best way to go. You would be talking 6 hours or so.
