Taxi service from Cancun airport!
This is a great site with lots of good information
We've been to PV a number of times (great place), however this winter we are planning our 1st. trip to the Cancun area this winter.
I am told that the taxi service from Cancun airport to town is expensive. How expensive?
What are other options? We are taking air only, therefore hotel shuttles don't work for us.
Any and all info would be greatly appreciated.
Hank
Not a problem. We did take a cab to the airport, but they are more expensive from the airport. You will see a booth for van service in the airport. Take one of these. They carry about 6-8 people in one trip to the hotels and downtown area, starting at the southern end of the hotel zone and ending downtown. You should expect to pay around $10 per person. The trip to downtown for us was about 30-40 minutes.

Remember, taxi fares are negotiable, just like almost everything else in Mexico - I've even bargained for better deals on car rentals. Although I took a van into downtown Cancun, I took a taxi from downtown (Tulum y Uxmal) to the airport and got it for about $8 by asking the driver to take the more direct route (i.e., NOT thru Hotel Zone). Always ask what the fare will be before you get in the cab - better bargaining position. If you're taking cabs around downtown, 8-10 pesos (about $1 US) is standard, and tipping is not customary.

Is there a better way to get from the Cancun airport to destinations south (ie Playa Del Carmen, ect)? The firts time I took a cab into Cancun and then a bus south. That took forever. The second time I haggled with several taxi drivers and still payed $40 to get to Puerto Morelos (20 minutes south). Return trips are half the price! Are there collective taxis? Any bus service? Does walking outside the airport perimeter help? There must be a cheaper way. How else would all the airport workers get to and from work?
PS I don't always check this site- please e-mail to let me know you posted something.

Hey Hank; Taxis from the Cancun airport are run by several familias and the prices are fixed. If you take any bus away from the airport, you can grab a taxi (negotiate in advance) for a fraction of the price. For instance, I fly in to Cancun an want to go to Puerto Juarez, about 15 miles away. The taxi service sells tickets which you "must" buy for $35. However, if you get on the "downtown" (centro de Cancun) bus and grab a taxi from wherever it stops, the total cost is less than $12. Good luck!
