Staying in Playa del Carmen. Xcaret/Xel-Ha/Xplor w/6 year old?
We are considering going to one of the above on our trip this upcoming week. Leaning towards Xcaret, but not sure if any are worth going to with a 6 year old. Trip will be generally low key, going to beach/sitting by pool. Will probably check out Tulum one day. Thought that one more "active" day could be fun. Want to limit transportation time (i.e. Coba and Chichen Itza are too far). Any recommendations and advice are appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I believe there is an age restriction for Xplor. I looked on thier web-site and it appears children need to be at least 8 years old. I really don't think a 6 year old would get anything out of it. For that price if they are not able to do the zip lines it's not worth it.
I actually prefer Xcaret over Xel-Ha. For children, I think they would get more out of it. There is more things to see and do at Xcaret like the underground floating river, museums, animals, exhibits and the night show. To me Xel-Ha was specifically for snorkeling and relaxing. Not much else to do there. Xcaret is a lot closer to Playa del Carmen than Xel-Ha.

We went to Xcaret last month and had our 7 year old along. She loved it, and I know she would have been fine going there at age 6, too. We only went for half a day, and I wish we would have gone for the whole day. Besides having lots of things to see, the grounds are really pretty and jungly. Most people talk about the show in the evening being the highlight of Xcaret, but for us, it was just okay - the day time activities and exhibits were much more fun.
Bring lots of water along when you go to Tulum, our daughter got really hot and thirsty when we took her there last year.

My photos, blogs, and travelogues are here if you'd like to check them out:

We spent a few weeks last June and another week in December and did some things your 6-year-old might enjoy.
I've also read great things on Trip Advisor about the 2 tour places below - they can customize trips to accommodate your interests and the age of your child. Happy trails!

Xcaret is perfect for that age (my kids loved it at 4 and 6). I also agree with the previous post that Coba is only a bit further and I think your 6 year old would most definitely prefer it to Tulum - you can climb and explore at Coba, not at Tulum.
