I've had pictures ruined by airport x-ray machines. In some parts of the world they use the older machines with stronger rays. My Thailand pictures came out very light and washed out. My boyfriend's came out even worse because he kept the film in his CHECKED luggage, which was x-rayed with much stronger machines than the carry-on luggage.
You can purchase a film bag to prevent your photos from being ruined. It's lined with something that keeps out the rays. It is available at photo shops (I don't know where else). I bought one immediately after that trip!
I went to Mexico last year though (the airport in Manzanillo) and my pictures came out incredible - without the film bag - so you may not have to worry about it there. I recommend keeping the film in your carry-ons, though. "I don't know if or how strongly they x-ray checked luggage.

You can use the lead lined bag to protect film, disc, etc.to but keep it in your carry on and ask for a manual inspection of just the lead bag. If you put it in your checked luggage or leave it in the carry on, the machines can 'see' in it, which security doesn't like. This method has worked well for me.
