Road Trip From Cancun South

Hi-

We are two couples with a child each (2 and 3 yrs) so at that age, they will enjoy all and remember nothing. .

We would love some experienced help on our drive South.

Our first stop after landing in Cancun at 12PM, will probably be the Mayan Beach Garden hotel (in Majahual)--if it's a 4-hr drive, we can handle it. Otherwise stop in Tulum?

From there, we will see how hard it is to get to Belize. We hear the dirt roads are too rocky for the little ones.

Otherwise, we are up for anything beautiful beach related.

If you have any advice at all, it would be greatly appreciated.

It is a 7-day trip.

Thanks all.

Do you have a map? After landing in Cancun the likelihood that you will be out of the airport until 1 or so is remote. I would not put kids in a car for a four hour drive after flying for an extended period. Even Tulum is quite a hike from the airport and will probably take you an hour and a half to two hours depending on traffic in Playa. Not sure what dirt roads you are referring to. The highway goes straight south to Belize but there are not alot of towns south of Tulum so you really need to watch your gas, speed, and driving after dark. The drive south from Cancun to Tulum offers many places to stay and have a good time. I'm not sure with little ones I would try to drive all the way to Belize and then back again.

I was looking at maps on various websites so, not the best I admit. Perhaps we should spend a night in Cancun. As you suggest, after the air flight, it is probably more than we should chew to drive to Tulum.

We are attempting to take the road -less-traveled approach, which is why we want to go South of Tulum. Perhaps we shouldn't go further than Majahual.

I'm just looking for advice from people that have done a similar trip and have found non-resort-type gems with beautiful beaches and good eats.

We are traveling May 11th.

Thanks in advance.

If you're looking for less tourists, don't head into CAncun. You could head south to Puerto Morales your first day. Cute little town, a few hotels and restaurants. Not the greatest beach, but it's a short drive from the airport, I'm guessing less than 30 minutes.

The main roads in Belize are no problem. All are hard surfaced. That said, the decent beaches are either in the cayes or on the south end of the country. Many car rental companies won't let you cross the border.

With little kids, I think you'll find plenty to do in Mexico for a week.

I wouldn't bother to head into Cancun either. Head south on 307 to either Puerto Morelos or PDC and before you go look at websites such as www.playa.info or www.locogringo.com to see what's available in the area which is no more than 1 1/2 hours south of Cancun. There's plenty to do with beautiful beaches much closer than driving all the way to Majahual. That way you can get a good idea for the area without just spending it in the car searching for that perfect spot. I got a great and durable map of the Yucatan Peninsula from Rough Guide but there are actually very few roads which you will actually need. www.cancunmap.com is also an excellent resource for maps and local information on hotels, places to eat etc. Laura and Perry do a great job of updating them frequently. Be prepared to be flexible, this is Mexico, and please be aware of driving rules - they are much different in MX and you will need to know what they are to be safe. Also, the state owned gas stations (Pemex) are not as frequent as you may be used to. They also do not take foreign currency or credit cards. Never ask for a fill up and count out your money in front of the attendant before they pump. Keep it in your hand until you are ready to pay and do not get distracted by other people trying to talk to you. Also, make sure they clear your pump before you fill. There is a Pemex outside the airport, in Puerto Morelos, several in PDC, Puerto Aventuras and Tulum. When you get the rental car make sure you look at the gas gauge as they frequently do not fill the car when you take it. You may need to stop fairly soon for gas. Also make sure you have a license plate, spare tire, and carefully document any scratches, etc. I use my camera for this as a backup. Tulum has fabulous beaches and may be more than enough for your needs. Have a great time.
