Riviera Maya - things to see/explore

Hello - my husband and I are going to the Riviera Maya in a few weeks and staying at the Valentin Imperial. We are looking for excursions or must see places. I am pregnant so we need more laid back activities. Wish I could do the zip lines.

any suggestions?

Is it worth taking a trip to Cancun or Cozumel for a day?

thanks!

I think Playa Del Carmen is a better town to visit than Cancun. There is a huge variety of restaurants, some very good, and lots of shopping and entertainment. The main touristy area of Cancun is more like Miami than Mexico. The cozumel ferry pier is in Playa del carmen, but, especially given you're pregnant, that ferry ride sometimes could be a bit turbulent so if you have any tendencies toward sea sickness, it may not be such a good idea.

The ruins at Tulum or Coba are also worth seeing.

Cenotes are abundant - and you don't HAVE to zipline to enjoy. Playa is fun - be sure to visit the "real" side of the town (west of the hiway)for some good local foods (locogringo.com has a good list of local eateries). Akumal is worth a visit - pretty beach, good food, bar, etc. Tulum, definitely - Coba if you want to see more impressive ruins.

We just came back from the Valentin & loved it. Spent time shopping in Playa del Carmen then did an afternoon tour of Tulum which was great. I would suggest staying away from the ferry to Cozumel...it was the roughest boat ride I was ever on. Even after taking 2 Bonine my husband was seasick for the entire ride. I couldn't even think about doing that while pregnant.
Have fun!

We were on a family vacation (4 adults and 2 young chldren) to Rivera Maya for Thanksgiving. We stayed at the Grand Mayan which was lovely9 restaurants, pools and eco area) We went to Tulum and Coba- both excellent choices. Playa del Carmen is a walkable with great restaurants and shops. The kids went snorkeling off a boat by the hotel.
