Riu Palace, Riviera Maya

We are considering Riu Palace for Honeymoon in March,2004.
A few things are very important to us: to get a room close to the beach, a good ocean view, dancing in the evening. Is it true that it is a long walk to the beach, does it have a shade areas ? Also, any comments on standard room and suite.
Thanks.
Lena

we stayed there two years ago. No rooms are close to the beach. It's a bit of a hike. It's a horseshoe shaped hotel. So you may be "closer" to the beach depending on where you are but you won't be close. The beach is also very wide with many palm trees. I thought it had the best beach down there. The rooms, food and service at the hotel were excellent. The only downside is it seems that at midnite the place shuts down. Very little activity.

Heyy! we stayed at the riu yucatan next door. the palace was very beautiful, but we felt that it was mainly dominated by older crowds in their 40'50 etc. its very posh feeling. the beach is absolutely amazingg!! you'll love it forsure!!! i do agree about the "nitelife"....everything shuts down around 12ish. but overall its incredible! good luck and have tons of fun !!

Thank You so much for your help.
We are a couple from NYC, in early 30's, like a classy atmosphere , but also love to have fun, shows, going dancing, clubs, lounges...Where would you recommend to go in the evening after dinner in Riviera Maya ? Any other resort ?
We are going on March , 23 to Riu Palace ( got Honeymoon package )
Any comments ?
Thanks,
Lena

We stayed at Riu Palace last March and loved it. We will be there again this year from March 17-24. We are also in our 30s (from Chicago). Most people were our age or older - lots of Europeans and Canadians - but we did meet some couples in their early 20s, too. The rooms are beautiful and pretty big. Try to request a courtyard view before you go. Last year, we went to the Riu Tequila one night to check out the disco. There was some entertainment outside when we got there which was fun. However, there wasn't much going on at the disco (at least not when we were there). There is also a disco at the Yucatan next door but we never made it there. We did go into Playa del Carmen a couple of times after dinner and just hung out at a bar, sat close to the street and people watched. We had a good time but didn't really find a night club. Drinks were reasonable in town - we didn't want to be spending too much money since it was included in the hotel. Last time, we only went for 5 nights so we didn't have that much time to check everything out. There is a Senior Frog's in town. We have been to the one in Cancun and Acapulco and those are always fun - usually a pretty young crowd though. Check out La Parilla for great Margaritas. It is on 5th and 8th (across from Fridays). We had lunch there, too, and it was very good.

I forgot to add Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! Maybe we will run into you while we are there.
