Yes you need a Visa for Brazil. It is good for 5 years from the first date of entry. The Consulate I dealt with was in Houston Texas. I went in person with my passport with a prepaid Fedex packet to send back. It took several days. I hope this helps. Have fun in Rio.
PS Do not stay in Copacabana, shoot for Ipanema instead.

It is a definite pain and expense if you don't live near a regional consulate. The Houston office does not accept applications by mail and we either had to take off work and go to Houston (6 hrs away) or use a visa service.

If you opt for the visa service, be sure to check around . . . we received prices from $100 each to $200 each, not including the visa fee or overnight mail.

We stayed in Copacabana and LOVED it, Ipanema was full of Americans . . . we can see/visit with them at home.

I recently renewed my Brazil visa after 5 years in New York. You drop it off one day and you pick it up the next, a real pain in the neck. That prepaid fedex sounds like a good idea, I would have done that but I didn't think they would go for it in NY, I think I asked them if they would mail it. Anyway, I do not understand Airline gal "Do not stay in Copacabana" The first time I went to Rio over 20 years ago people told me the same thing, I listened to them and stayed in Ipanema, I was so disapointed that I did when I learned that Copa is a much more lively place, now I stay in Copacabana all the time. Why do people always say that do they think there is less crime in Ipanama, they better think again. I have been roobed twice on the beach in Ipanema and experienced a shooting in daylight right on the beach, the whole of Ipanema ran for their lives, I ran all the way to Copacabana where I was staying. I have never seen one problem in recent years in Copacabana, so Airline gal, why do you recomend Ipanema over Copacabana?

Ross, a Visa service:
Zierer Visa Service Inc
119 West 57 st
Suite 1008
New York, NY 10019
(212) 265-7887
They have a website, if you do not live in a city that has a Brazilian consulate a Visa service will be very helpfull. Also the Brazilian consulates have websites with the prices and requirements, I do believe that they don't take cash if you go in person, they prefer money orders.

The price for a visa is 45.00 USD. You obtain the visa from a brazilian consulate. They are geographically located around the US. The web will indicate the one responsible for the area you live. I used LA and it was very smooth. Sent it by mail, with $10 USD handling fee, a prepaid return envelope and had it in about 2 weeks. Of course it can be done in person. All you need to send is the application (which you can download off computer), send your Passport (needs one blank page for the visa), the fee and a visa photo. Smooth as can be.

Ross take Airline gals advise. Ipanema is much nicer than Copacabana. It is far more upscale with nicer restaurants and shopping. I go to Brazil quite often on business so I have covered a lot of territory. Americans are everywhere Sandi I do not understand where you get your information...one trip perhaps???
