well i stayed there with my 17 yr old daughter last summer (2002) and overall it was okay. My expectations always seem to be higher. Food was very good for a buffet with a good variety. Very friendly waiters there. I was disappointed with the beach area though and lots of seaweed water was pretty rough, even though they put bolders to keep it calmer. I was always looking for a "clear" spot to swim. Also the yellow and red flags were out a lot to swim with caution. Location is quite remote, took a one day trip to Playa del carmen one day, loved it there and the beautiful turqoise water there (not at all like the Bahia). The pools were ok, especially the adult one, more quieter, if thats what you like. well, let me know if you want to know anything else. oh yes, its a very large resort with little bus stops with carts picking up every 15 minutes.

We just returned from a two-week stay at Bahia Principe Akumal, which is beside the Principe Tulum. If you will be staying at Tulum you will also be able to use the facilities at Akumal. We are quite particular about where we stay, and we loved this resort. It is extremely clean, the grounds are beautiful, and the staff are very helpful and friendly. Our party used the beaches at both the Tulum and Akumal sides, and found them both to be fabulous. The beach itself is approximately 1.5 kilometres long, and we never ever had to hunt for a space or a beach chair. We did not feel crowded in the least. The water is wonderful for swimming... crystal clear, blue-green, with lots of fish to see when snorkelling (which is included in the All-Inclusive package). I would recommend bringing water shoes because there are a few rocks and shells in the water, but it's not bad. If you go to the dock area by the "Bahia Divers" booth on the beach (in between the two resorts) this is where we found the best swimming area to be. Plus you will be able to see lots of colourful fish just as you are standing in the water! as well, the coral reef in front of the resorts is the second largest in the world! There is also a beach-side bar with swings around it on the Akumal side, which is fun to see. The food is great. Between the two resorts there are 6 a la carte restaurants, two buffet restaurants, and two 24-hour snack bars. The Akumal side has a wonderful greenhouse walking path (if you're interested in plants). You will not run out of things to do at the resort, if that's your choice: beach volleyball, bicycling, water polo, bingo, etc. are all available, but we spent most of our time just lazing on the beach. We took a trip into Playa Del Carmen, and unlike another response we found the water there to be just as beautiful at our resort. We also took a trip to Tulum (you don't really need more than a couple of hours there), and I would highly, highly recommend Xel-Ha (pronounced Shell-Ha) for a day trip (take the all-inclusive and all of your snorkelling, food and drinks are included). The resort is large, but certainly everything can be walked to; alternatively you can take the carts/buses that come by every 15 minutes. I would be happy to provide more details if you like; just send me an e-mail. We have been to Cuba, Hawaii, Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas, and Mazatlan, and this, by far, is the best resort we have stayed at (and we only stay at 4 stars or higher). You will have a lot of fun!

KMRUNNER , i would like some info. on bahia principe. Do you snorkle a lot,if so, would you rate the beach at bahia as good or better as the main beach near the town of akumal. I also read your statment about the reef , that it is very large , i had read that it was artifical. Maybe the artifical reef is on the tulam side of the hotel complex , i am looking at the akumal complex for a visit. Thanks Nick- e- mail- ( [email protected]
