Rainy Day and Other Activities in Ambergris

So we're leaving tomorrow for a 9 day trip to Belize. We start at Chaa Creek for 4 nights, do an overnight to Tikal at the Tikal Inn, then go to Ambergris Caye for 4 nights. We've booked nothing for while we're in San Pedro or Ambergris Caye. What are must-do activities? The forecast for the beach is rainy. I'm worried about how we'll spend our days. Can you snorkel in the rain?

Thank you! Michelle

Our favorite thing was snorkeling at Hol Chan; we saw tons of rays, nurse sharks, pretty tropical colored fish, and sea turtles there. A lot of tour groups pair it with a stop at Shark Ray Alley. We also did a snorkel tour to see manatees and another one to Mexico Rocks. Yes you can snorkel in the rain as long as it isn't lightning. A lot of times the weather forecast will say rain, but it's not usually an all day rain.

This is Belize's dry season, so the rain shouldn't last all day, like Volcano Girl said. Take a boat to see the Lighthouse Reef, the Belize Blue Hole, and the Belize Barrier Reef. These are some of the most interesting scuba diving destinations in the world.

If it's raining, rent a golf cart and drive around down town San Pedro. This area has a lot of art galleries and spas that you could visit while you wait for the weather to clear.

Have an awesome trip!

Hopefully, you won't have too much rain, we've been on Ambergris about 10 days now, there have been a few rainy periods, but, nothing that lasted all day. It's beautiful out there this morning, light breezes and some high clouds.

I'd also recommend at least one snorkel trip. Maybe 1/2 day fishing, along with a beach barbecue.

We like to take the water taxi a few miles north and walk/bar hop back into town. A fun and relaxing way to spend a day.

Jan. used to be the "dry" time but in the recent years not the case...we spent 4 straight days at Chaa Creek watching the rain...be prepared....better on Ambergris but still some rain.

Jan was never dry season and remember,4 days does not reflect 365 days over many yrs. That was your experience, sadly. But I'd rather be on the mainland with much more to do rain or shine, than on the beach with rains.

If you consult most weather information on belize as you plan your trip indication is that Jan. should be more dry than for example summer months....maybe San Ignacio is quite different? Of course it is jungle and rain will happen and as I read reviews of our hotel I see many people report having weather issues in Jan. Feb. Also in Placencia torrential rains with the locals sitting around and saying oh this never happens in Jan. As I explore new places I am finding that one can no longer count on the conventional weather information...clearly things have changed.
