Rafting advice needed

We have the option of rafting while we are at Arenal or Manuel Antonio and prefer an exciting (but not extreme) adventure (probably Class III/IV rapids). I've read about the Naranjo, Savegre and Sarapiqui, but would appreciate advice from anyone who has rafted these waters.

Although we have not rafted those rivers, we know the Sarapiqui has different sections that include class II, III and IV. We went rafting once from Alajuela (Hotel Xandari) down the Pascua section of the Reventazon, but that was Class V, and a few weeks ago we went down Rio Toro, which we did from Arenal but should have done it from Peace Lodge (near Sarapiqui) and that was Class IV and very difficult. I would suggest that you contact Rios Tropicales directly (they have an 800 number) and ask for advice. They were very helpful to us. Have fun!

I've heard that the rafting near M.A. isn't as good, but I haven't tried it myself. We used Pozo Azul to raft on the Sarapiqui (from Arenal) and they were fantastic. I highly recommend them.

We just returned from CR on 12/27/05 and rafted one day on the Naranjo River in Manuel Antonio. It was really pretty and we enjoyed it a lot. Our guide said it was class 3 technical because the water level was a little low. We never fell out of the raft but had a few times where my heart was beating faster than usual. HTH

JDP,

Pozo Azul picked us up at our hotel -- Arenal Lodge -- and to be honest I don't know how long it took to drive because we were talking and enjoying the ride. We did the class III rapids, which provided excitement but weren't too scary for people who hadn't done it before. They told us that the Class IV rapids were much, much larger than III and you really should be experienced. The guides were fantastic, and the trip included a good lunch at the Sarapiqui Neotropical Center.

Question for ginnysher re: rafting Naranjo. I will be in Manuel Antonio with my 13 year old son, do you think it would be too slow a rafting trip for someone his age? He would definately enjoy rapids.
