PV and North Safe?

Is is safe to be staying in Punta de Mita and is the driving safe? What is there to do in the town? Or would we have to travel everyday to PV?

I've never heard of any problems of personal safety (I've been traveling to the area for years). And the highway's fine.

There's not much to do in Punta Mita, it's a tiny town. Puerto Vallarta is over 1 hour drive so I can't imagine you'd want to do that every day. You could explore further north like San Pancho, Sayulita, etc. Or the nearby beaches of El Anclote or Destiladeras. Bucerias is the next biggest town heading back toward PV and maybe only 1/2 hour drive.

If this is your first time to PV, try staying closer to PV (south of Nueva Vallarta & the Marina). The bus system (.40) is a great way to get to town, only 5 min. or so is a lot of fun. If you are close to town you will go try different restaurants (many wonderful ones to choose from) as well as get the feel of PV.
If you stay in Punta de Mita, not much up there and you will not get the feel of what PV has to offer.

Thanks guys! I think the people we are going with want to stay in Punta de Mita so I guess there will be compromise.

It's only 14 pesos by bus - ATM Line - to PV from Punta de Mita.
The closest town to Punta de Mita is La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, not Bucerias, about a 15 min drive, several restaurants with live music incl. a British pub that serves Guinness.

bburpi, Is La Cruz as large as Bucerias? Was thinking of the closest supermercado to stock up their condo.
