Puerto Vallarta ocean swimming?
I've looked at hotels in PV on tripadvisor and the photos, I don't see many people swimming in the ocean. Is there a reason for that? Water temperature? Safety?
We've been to Grand Cayman, Cancun & Playa del Carmen and I realize the Pacific side doesn't have the same kind of white beaches, but we do want to swim.
It looks like Marriot CasaMagna has a huge pool, but we like to body surf & snorkel too. Family of 4, daughters are 19 & 21.
Airline cost to the Carribean is $200-400 per ticket more than PV.
Any suggestions for good beaches in that area?

IIRC there are seven rivers that flow into the bay and after a heavy rain you wouldn't believe the crap (literally and figuratively) that gets flushed into the bay. This is one reason fewer people swim in the ocean here.
For snorkeling, take one of the boat trips that go south or, for a longer trip, offshore to the small islands.

People certainly do swim in the Bay. Down at Playa Los Muertos (Old Town) public beach there's always people in the water.
It is rough and sometimes not safe, but I do not believe it is polluted. See a complete discussion of this over on Trip Advisor PV Forum, with many people who live full-time in Vallarta.

We stayed at the Casa Magna also had hoped to swim in the ocean. While the beach was lovely for sitting, swimming was impossible. The drop off is very rapid and the undertow was incredibly strong. Even though its a bay, its deceptive. And of course, there are no lifeguards, and not even a rope showing you a "safe zone" (probably because there is no safe zone.) I didn't see anyone do more than put their feet in the water. I would definitely not recommend it for children, and only for very confident strong-swimming adults. Fortunately the pool is gorgeous!

Reports of pollution in the bay, come from people without knowledge on the subject, who have never experienced a normal ecosystem.
They see brown water and make the wrong assumption.
As they say, "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing"
