Hey everyone! Looking for some input on Puerto Vallarta for a honeymoon. We are from Michigan so everyone goes to Cancun, Riviera Maya, and the Caribbean due to length of flights. We want to go somewhere everyone else doesn't. Plus, it will be the beginning of September, so we would like to avoid it being ruined by a hurricane. Looking at Secrets-Vallarta Bay for a location. My fiance and I are both fun loving people and enjoy cocktails, dancing, shopping, sun, and adventures. Definitely want someplace upbeat with plenty to do! Is Puerto Vallarta a good fit for us? If not, what else would you recommend? Thanks a million, in advance, for your help!

I love love LOVE Puerto Vallarta, but September is hot, humid, and the height of the rainy season. So because of your timing I hesitate to recommend it. Actually that's unfortunately true pretty much anywhere in the Caribbean and Mexico. Besides the weather, it has everything you ask for.

I agree with Suze. Sure, there will be great deals, but there is a reason why... Hot, humid, even a hurricane chance on the Pacific side.

MichelleY, It's highly unlikely for Vallarta to get slammed by a hurricane. I think it's only happened once in the past 50 or 100 years (something like that). But the weather will NOT be what most people would want for a honeymoon holiday.

I figured Puerto Vallarta is much safer from hurricanes than Cancun, Riviera Maya, or any of the Caribbean islands....except the ABC islands. The weather comment does not invoke confidence in making that the destination....except everywhere in that region will have the same issues. Not really sure what to think....

Much less or no chance of a,hurricane, but very hot, humid, not fun.

Go to Hawaii . We just got back from Maui and wondered why it took us 24 years to get back!

We spent the month of October in Puerto Vallarta. Loved it. We had some rain, certainly wasn't awful. September is most likely rainier.

How about far south in the Caribbean, Aruba, Curacao or Bonaire? Pretty much out of the hurricane belt. Probably rainy season there as well, but, they tend to be drier in general.

Or, for a fun city, but, not great beaches, head to Cartagena, Colombia. Lots to see and do. We followed up with some beach time on San Andres in the Caribbean. Not sure what the weather would be there.

I'd look into Hawaii (i've been to Vallarta 20+ times, Hawaii 6 times and love them both very much, but this is about the weather not the destination).

Save PV for when you can go sometime in months between Nov thru May to have great weather and be able to better enjoy all the city has to offer.

Hawaii is awesome in September! Or go to Aruba (it is not in the hurricaine zone).

After getting some serious analysis paralysis today, I think we are leaning towards Curacao. Still basically hurricane proof, great nightlife, shopping, etc. Aruba was our original plan, but I read up on the weather and it said the trade winds vanish in Septemer due to them being sucked up by depressions, making it almost unbearably hot. Then Puerto Vallarta looked great...until I found out about the humidity and potential for rain. Any input from anyone on Curacao?

Curacao sounds great to me. Although I would be surprised if the weather is much different from Aruba.

I absolutely LOVE PV!!!! (also a Michigander living in Chicago)

The last time I went, October 2011, the weather was awesome. We always rent a condo at the Shangri La in the marina district. Some rain, but mostly hot & humid. Lots of sun. FWIW.....there was a hurricane that past very close about a week before we went.

PV is gorgeous. I love walking along the Malecon and enjoying the charming restaurants. Always go for the mole at the Red Cabbage. I can not say enough great things about PV. It's charming, friendly people, lovely downtown, nice hotels, etc. etc. etc. GO!!!! You won't regret it!

We split a trip between Curacao and Bonaire a few years ago. Enjoyed both islands, but, we much preferred Bonaire. Smaller, easier to get around.

However, from what you describe, Curacao sounds like a better fit for you. The small city of Willemstad is very nice. Lots of restaurants/bars. It's pretty. We spent a lot of hours sitting, watching the swing bridge, eating and drinking.

Mountain Mexico perhaps Guadalajara, Guanajuato, Oaxaca would all be excellent choices for a most romantic Luna de Miel.
We had ours at the Quinta Real in Gudalajara possibly the finest hotel in all of Mexico. Suite 45 15 years ago.
Comfortable Weather with much to do.
