Playa del Carmen help-Royal Hideaway or Gala Playacar?

going to Mexico with my boyfriend in 1 month and still haven't picked a hotel!!

Anyone able to make a comparison between these resorts? I'd really appreciate anyone who could help tip the scale either way.

We are in our (very)early 30's,and in short, like to eat, drink and be merry! The beach and pool (and room) quality are also important considerations.

thanks guys!

Amy,
I stayed in Playa Del Carmen in Sept. 99 for 2 weeks. The first week I stayed at the Iberostar, the second, Royal Hideaway. The Iberostar was a very large resort with a ton of activities and a great beach. This resort was in my opinion, one of the best resorts I have been to. The food was excellent with a great variety. The staff was very friendly, although many could not speak English. The rooms were nice with large balconys. On a scale of 1 to 10....I would give it a 9. The second week was for more of a relaxing week. The Royal Hideaway is a much more laid back atmosphere. The resort itself is very nice. Very upscale. The food is all sit down and very much top shelf. There is however no night time entertainment except for 2 dinner shows during the week. The rooms were very nice and elegent. On a scale of 1 to 10...8.5. I went with my wife and 17 other people. We all range in age from 27-35. If you are looking for alot of fun and things to do, the Iberostar is a excellent choice. If you are looking for total relaxation with no excitement, Royal Hideaway.
Good luck.

Rich,

thanks for the input. I had gotten from other people's posts that the Iberostar was much more of a "family" atmosphere while the RH and Gala catered more to adults. did you get that impression?

Hypothetically, if the RH is dead at night, how accessible is the town of Playa del carmen and is there any nightlife there to speak of?

thanks again!
amy

hi Amy,We just got back from the Iberostar. It is really a family resort..LOTS of kids. If the beach is important the ones at the Gala and Hideaway were bigger and less crowded. They are all beautiful, however. It is very easy to get to Playa del carmen for nightly entertainment. Its a $4 cab ride and takes a couple minutes. Its a great town ,safe and fun. Lots of entertainment, bars, rest. etc. You will probably want to go there were ever you stay. The entertainment at the Iberostar was more for families..alot of disney stuff. The food at the Iberostar is excellent. Have fun!

Amy,

I haven't stayed at either resort but I get the impression that the Royal Hideaway may be a little more "upscale" and a little more expensive. I know it's not much of a review but I hope that helps a little!

have a great trip!
