Phone/Data Access recommendation

Hello,

This may be a common situation.

I'm going to Cabo in a few weeks.

I want to have access primarily to email through more than Wi-Fi as I do whatever down there.

I have an iPhone 4, but it is locked (so I guess I can't just get a Mexican SIM card for it).

What are your recommendations?

Should I purchase an iPhone 3G that is unlocked, and get a Mexican SIM card down there or over the Internet?

Are there renting services that give you the phone at the airport and you return it when you are on your way back?

Other options?

Again, I'm less concerned about phone and more about data for downloading email, surfing the web, etc.

Thanks in advance!

Steve

There's no cheap and easy solution. Data is expensive and will be whether you have a cheap Mexican phone or not. And unless you're going for several weeks, I can't see any benefit in buying an unlocked iphone for over $100. I'm also not sure what companies support the iphone in Mexico and what data charges are like there, but they are probably not cheap.

You can buy an international data plan from your provider for your iphone, and that will likely be cheaper than any other option. But the way to save money is to use the phone solely for email and resist the urge to surf the web. Why can't you just do without that for a few days?

It's a corporate phone, so I can't get an international data plan for a vacation.

I came across iPhoneTrip.com where I can get a Data only SIM card for $8.00 per day sent to me.

I'm considering getting an unlocked phone to have for future trips as well.

If it's a corporate phone and you are required to keep in contact to deal with email while on vacation, why is this an issue? The company pays the fees and would pay the roaming fees as well. After all, you are using the phone for business purposes. Or am I missing something here?

No, it wouldn't be for business reasons. I need to keep contact with other things. That's why they're not paying for it.
