Parrot Sanctuary in Alejuela

I visited a fun place in Alejuela this time. (Alejuela is the city that the airport is located in -- outside of San Jose.) It's called Amigos de las Aves. An older couple has a beautiful estate w/ over 300 parrots. Some are rescued from the wild, some are pet rescues, and some are being raised there until they can be released. You walk through a beautiful aviary with lots of trees, plants, and open bird cages. The friendly birds are free to fly around when visitors walk through. It was really fun and exciting and a little bit scary when the big birds would land on our shoulders. They have lots of macaws -- including 5 hyacynths, amazons, a cockatoo, toucans, and more. My friend and I were laughing when one of the amazons joined in with a big hearty laugh, which made us laugh harder and he laughed harder. They also have a nursery of baby parrots in various stages. It's a fun visit if you like birds. I have a lot of photos if anyone wants to see.

As a parrot owner and lately doing rescue if we ever get back to Costa Rica I would love to see this Sanctuary... Parrot Pop and I stopped in Miami several years ago before a cruise and went to the old Parrot Jungle... I thought I died and went to heaven.. As I went over to talk to the birds that were being used for pictures one of the birds jumped on my arm...lol.. and the photographer said that wasn't allowed..he forgot to tell the bird.. In another spot I heard a bird call "Barbara, Barbara, Barbara" I just about broke down.... it seems the bird was given to Parrot Jungle by an owner who no longer wanted him .. In Puerta Platta in the D.R. there is a man that rescues all sorts of animals too which were held as pets until they became unruly..
