Osa Peninsula in October

We are planning two weeks in Costa Rica at the end of October. We were really hoping to make it to Drake Bay but we have learned that the hotels there (Casa Corcovado and La Paloma, specifically) are closed for the entire month. Is it worth it to go to a hotel near Puerto Jimenez in October? How difficult would it be to get to Corcovado National Park from there? Thanks in advance for any help.

This is what we were told. We stayed at Bosque del Cabo near Puerto Jimenez, which is a fabulous place on Cabo Matapolo. One one of our guided hikes, we spoke with the guide about best times of the year to visit. He strongly discouraged September and October. The place stays open (as many don't), but it is extremely soggy, sometimes the grounds are covered with water, the trails are almost too muddy and slippery to navigate (there is a lot of up and down hiking). And that is without mention of the continuing daily rain during these months. VERY few people choose to visit during this time--I suppose because it would be hard to justify the expense and not have access to the full range of activities. And the Osa IS a very expensive area to visit.

Well, did that all sound negative or what? I should have gone ON to mention that Costa Rica is absolutely full of so many wonderful things to do and places to visit. You will have absolutely NO problem filling a 2-week itinerary with amazing places! Take your pick! Just save the Osa for another month!

Thanks Shillmac. We are not likely to return to Costa Rica (I am confident that we will love it but there are so many other places to visit on our list!), so we are looking at this decision as whether to go to the Osa in October or never to go at all...

As shillmac has said, there are SO many other wonderful places in Costa Rica, so I hope you go and see for yourself, even if you decide against the Osa!

Oh yes, we are definitely going to Costa Rica, just debating the Osa portion of it all!
