Ometepe island

Is it worth it to spend a night on Ompetepe if I don't want to spend 8 hours hiking a volcano? Thanks!

You might get more replies on Lonely Planet Thorntree. I'm planning to go to Nicaragua next year, so can't give any advice, but there seem to be a lot of posters on that board who know Nicaragua.

We spent a full day on Ometepe and would recommend staying overnight there. Lots of visitors climb the volcanoes, but that's not the only highlight of Ometepe. I would say yes.

We did not hike a volcano while on Ometepe, although we did hike with a guide to see the petroglyphs, etc. If you like hanging around in the jungle, eating great food, and possibly swimming on a secluded beach, I would definitely stay there awhile.

Would definitely recommend spending a night in Ometepe. Am not into hiking a volcano for 8 hrs either but did a 2-hr hike on Conception and saw petroglyphs along the way. Stayed at Villa Paraiso, rustic, good restaurant, good location on the lake, accomodating staff. Made an interesting side trip to Punta Maria Jesus and a long hot walk to Ojo de Agua, also did a tour of Charco Verde (not that interesting and no monkeys). It was a really different experience and glad I went. I am from the Atlantic City area and when I got off the ferry in Moyogalpa I could not believe my eyes when I saw a sign "Casino Atlantic City" so maybe I am prejudiced!
