Oaxaca to Huatulco?

We would like to spend a few days in Oaxaca next February and then spend the rest of the week in a beach town like Huatulco. Is the drive from Oaxaca easy? Are there any interesting towns where we could stop overnight and make it a two day trip?We haven;t figured out the flight logistics yet-are thinking of flying to Oaxaca and flying back to Boston from Huatulco. Any comments would be appreciated.

We (two couples) did this trip last year. We booked our flights from San Francisco to Oaxaca and return from Huatulco to SFO. While in Oaxaca, we went to the AeroTucan office and booked flights to Huatulco ($118p/p). The drive is a grueling 8 hour trip on a very windy, not especially comfortable road. Flight was painless--just remember they operate on Mexican time--flight may or may not take off on time--but you will enjoy the views!

I wouldn't drive- There are two routes. The shourter route is really windy and the road is bad (from what people have told me). The longer route (from personal experience), really windy and not quite so bad. Have bused it taking between 8-11 hours depending. No really great places to stop, Salina Cruz is the only big town and certainly not a tourist destination. There are also lots of topes and the occasional military check points. There have been some reports of crime on these routes in years past, I have not heard anything lately. I would bus or fly.
