Night shows-Chichen Itza vs.Xcaret?

If I have to choose between these two for their night shows, which do you all recommend or can you tell me how they differ from each other?

I am not sure if I understand. Are you going to choose one place or the other depending on the night show?

Xcaret is like a jungle Disneyland. Their night show is very nice, but it feels a bit disorganized.

The show at Chichen Itza is just a soundtrack and colored lights illuminating the pyramids. When it begins, it is interesting, but it gets boring after a while.

For a day trip, I would choose Chichen Itza over Xcaret any day of the week and twice on sundays. IMHO, Chichen Itza is something that you will remember for the rest of your life. Xcaret is a good way to pass a day, and not much more.

Actually we were surprised by how much we enjoyed the night show at Xcaret. It was probably 3 or 4 years ago, so maybe it's changed, but it wasn't disorganized at all. One of the highlights was a couple of 'new age' Mexican singers (man and woman) - they were amazing. I also joined the 'tour' part of the evening. We didn't stay for the whole evening - we had to catch our ferry back to Cozumel and the rest of the show was folkloric (which we've already seen on other occasions elsewhere). Really, I was quite surprised at how good it was - we don't usually enjoy that kind of thing!

I had planned to go to Chichen's night show but after getting a glimpse of some of those panels of neon light being reflected by the sun in the daylight, I chose not to return at night and instead roamed the plaza of Valladolid. Somehow those colors had nothing to do with the beauty of the architecture and I wanted to remember it in it's natural beauty. If you are doing these as day trips from Cancun, you'd end up back home quite late but if you're planning to stay in Pista, then go for it, it's included in the price of your day ticket and you can return for the show.

Original poster here:
We are planning an EARLY start by rental car, Xcaret first for about 5 hrs then back to Puerto Morales for lunch, then the toll road to Chichen Itza, checking into Dolores Alba Motel nearby (recommended in Fodor's post-thanks!), relax, freshen up, eat dinner & go to the evening light show at the ruins.
Does that sound about right?
Next day, see the ruins EARLY and then head south thru Coba (ruins) and to Tulum (ruins & beach), then up coast to Ceynotes/Akumel swim snorkel at Yal-Kul Lagoon. On to Playa del Carmen for eats and home (hotel zone) before dark.

That's ambitious but the sequence is good and to do the light show on Sunday night then return Mon AM (try to be there right at 8AM) is a good idea. You are covering a lot of miles with this plan but you can make good time on the highways even if they are rather dull.
