Monteverde Lodge or Sapo Dorado?

Hi, I have a question for those familiar with accomodations in Monteverde. I am traveling to the area with Costa Rica Expeditions and we have been offered a choice of staying at the Monteverde Lodge or El Sapo Dorado. I'm a bit torn and and I think I remember seeing some discussion about Monteverde Lodge here before. I'm a bit worried that the lodge may feel a bit "fussy" and overly touristy whereas Sapo Dorado seems beautiful, rustic and more tranquil. But from the pictures of Sapo Dorado, the cabins look sort of dark and spare. It's kind of hard to tell from the web sites. Anybody have first hand knowledge of either or both establishments? Advice/opinions appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi Judy,

I stayed in both a couple of years ago and for what it's worth, I enjoyed Monteverde Lodge more. El Sapo Dorado has a wide variety of rooms, so I can't speak for them all, but I would describe ours as dark and spare. It did have wonderful views, though, and better food. I would describe ML as beautiful and rustic and not at all 'a bit fussy'.
The room in ML was much more comfortable and the grounds are really pretty with some nice trails.

Enjoy!

Sorry Shanah, but I don't remember. We made arrangements with Costa Rica Connection. I checked my old correspondance with them and they referred to a "std room", so I would think we would have had the cheapest room, but based on the pictures on El Sapo's web site, I would say we had a "Sunset Suite".
