Mexico or Hawaii

I know this is a Latin American board but for all of you who have travelled to both Mexico and Hawaii, which was your favorite and what are the pros and cons of each. I'm trying to make a decision on where to take my girlfriend for a holiday. We want nice beaches, beautiful resort and a few water sports. All inclusive sounds good to us but Hawaii does not offer it.

I am biased, as i've been to hawaii only once and to mexico about 10 times _ but i much prefer mexico. For me it is a cultural thing _ I love the food, the music, the art, the language, the architecture, the markets, the people. From a practical standpoint, it's cheaper and closer for me to get almost anywhere in Mexico than to go to Hawaii. And the beaches and water, especially in the yucatan, are gorgeous. That said, I've never been to an all-inclusive, and I'm not sure the experience there would be the same as i have had at smaller hotels. And, I think your experience in Hawaii would vary dramatically depending on which island you went to. You might also ask this on the US board, where you'll probably get really different responses!

You will spend more money in Hawaii. You will feel much more at ease in Hawaii if you have never traveled to Mexico. The water is much better on the Caribbean side of Mexico than it is in Hawaii. We are a 10 hour flight from Oahu and 3.5 hours from Cancun. We did Oahu once and Mexico about 20 times. We may do the islands again after we retire but would split the flight over two days. In Mexico an all inclusive is ok if you drink from early morning until dawn else it is a lot more fun to bar and restaurant hop not to mention a lot cheaper.

As a travel experience I would choose Mexico though I like Hawaii. The only really good snorkeling in Mexico is the Caribbean side. Mexico will offer you a cultural experience unless you choose to stay only in Cancun.

Personally I strongly recommend that you do NOT stay at an all inclusive resort. You will miss the experience of trying Meixcan cuisine at various restaurants. All inclusive is usually far more expensive than eating out at restaurants unless you drink a lot. The food also tends to be more bland and institutional like. There are exceptions but you woulld really be missng one of the delights of Mexico in sampling various restaurants.

Been to both and both are beautiful. I like the cultural differences of Mexico and the feeling that one has stepped back in time. I enjoy expecting the unexpected, practicing my Spanish ,eating different foods, and exploring our neighbors to the south.

Adios!

mexicodan
www.choice1.com/villamontana.htm

The scenery is better in Hawaii...the lush rolling hills above the beautiful beaches...

But the water is 1000 times better in Cancun or Cozumel. The Pacific is ice cold even in Hawaii...its like a warm bathtub in Cancun or Cozumel.

And the water doesn't get any clearer than in the Carribean. And the snorkeling is better in the Carribean too.

One thing you see in Hawaii...or even the Pacific side of Mexico, is allot of tourists standing in knee deed in the water, squirming because of the cold water, maddly trying to work up the courage to plunge in.

I've been to both several times. In Cancun, I'd just check into an all-inclusive, relax and enjoy. I wouldn't even leave the hotel...there's no need to leave and everything beyond the hotel is a dirty disappointment - except the ruins...but is you want ruins, I reccomend Italy.

If you want to get out and leave the hotel, go to the Virgin Islands or Hawaii.

Again, Hawaii is one of the most scenic places on earth and although the water isn't as warm or clear as the Carribean, traveling about the islands is heaven.

Personally, I think Hawaii would be a much better place for a honeymoon. The schenic drives, the lush forrests, the waterfalls...Your wife will probably like it better - women like to on all the little excursions and the excursions are much more pleasant in Hawaii.

But if its warm, clear water on white beaches, the Carribbean is the place to go...because the water and beaches don't get any better anywhere in the world.

Note to Al Roden: I disagree with you about the USVI: They are also quite DISGUSTING (yes, even St. John), especially compared to Cancun!!!

sorry, as a big mexico booster i must disagree vigorously on the above post about everything outside hotels in cancun being a dirty disappointment. personally, i can't stand the plastic, artificial hotel district, and much prefer the outer areas, even if they are not as clean as some visitors might expect. as for ruins, those in mexico, belize, guatemala etc. are spectacular and definitely worth visiting_ and, yes, i've been to italy.
I have been to Maui and Kauai, and to the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico (Isla Mujeres, Merida, Laguna Bacalar, Puerto Aventuras). The scenery was better in Maui and Kauai -- more mountainous and lush (the Yucatan is pretty flat, although I know there are other parts of Mexico that are more mountainous). However, I enjoyed the Mexican cultural environment more -- the Mayan ruins and the sense of being in a foreign culture. Both have lovely beaches and snorkeling, and great food. Mexico is far less expensive than Hawaii, especially for food. One advantage of Hawaii is that you can drink the water and eat anything you want and not worry about getting sick. I am not a fan of all-inclusives so I can't help you with that (anyway, I surely would not go all-inclusive in Mexico -- food there is delicious and inexpensive and I'm sure you could do better on your own than at an AI, both in terms of quality and cost). The two are really so different that it is hard to compare. Both are great though and I'm sure you'd have a terrific honeymoon either way.
