Greetings! My husband and I will be doing our first all inclusive vacation in a few weeks, with our 8 month old twin babies. We are staying in Puerto Morelos and are looking for some recommendations for day trips...We like to hike/explore and have backpacks for the kids. Any ideas?

There is a fabulous botanical garden a few miles south of Puerto Morales called Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marin Nature Garden (or something like that). It is located 1.2k south along the main highway. Kind of hard to see from the road. We took the ADU bus from PDC and walked back to the garden. It was worthwhile. Lots of plants, trees, a great trail with a hanging bridge, and lots of huge iguanas. It is not huge. You could do it with the babies pretty easily, IMHO.

If you walk the highway back to the interchange for Puerto Morales, there is a really, really good little comedore along side the road, I can't remember what its called, just an open kitchen with a few really good choices for 45 pesos including agua fresca, rice, beans, tortillas and entree. The day we were there, there was a chicken dish and a meatball dish. 1/2 way between the botanical garden and the turn off for Puerto Morales.

Xcaret would be a better choice than Xel ha with twin 8 month olds. Xel ha is based around water activities and there would be nothing for your babies to do, and you wouldn't be able to take part in most of the activities offered, such as snorkeling or tubing through the mangroves.

Xcaret however is more of a park based on Mexican culture. There are animals that your kids may enjoy. I believe there is a beach there. There are areas you could explore with your children in backpacks. It's a very full day, with a lot to see!

The pueblo of Puerto Morelos is interesting - it still has a fishing village feel. Several good restaurants, and a nice crafts market.
This part of Mexico is not really hiking country, but the ruins at Coba (which are in a jungle setting) are vast, and great for strolling around on it's wide gravel paths. There is also a monkey preserve nearby.
The ruins at Tulum are also very scenic, but have little shade, so go there early. The beach near the ruins is very beautiful, and great for relaxing after seeing the ruins. Tulum pueblo is lots of fun to explore - lots of funky Mexican shops, and some good restaurants.
If you want a more urban experience, Playa del Carmen is a fun place to walk around - tons of shops and restaurants, and a very nice beach to hang out. There is a park-like bird sanctuary at the south end of Playa that you might want to visit. A ferry ride from Playa to Cozumel might also be an option. The ride is fairly inexpensive, and takes about 45 minutes. Realize that the crossing is often fairly choppy.
