Mal Pais Lodging and area activities?
I will be in Mal Pais for 3 days. Any one have any lodging suggestions? I may stay at the Oasis Hotel. Looking for any surfing suggestion along this stretch of the coast and where to rent boards. Also looking for a good day hike on the drive between Mal Pais and the Paquera ferry. Thanks.

I have a surf shop in Mal Pais. It is called The Surf Shop and it is located on the main road in Playa Carmen. When you come into town, you will hit a T intersection at Frank's Place; turn right. We are 200 m down on the Beach side of the road. You will see a sign pointing towards Tabu Bar and the Beach on our property. We rent boards, give lessons, and provide a great place to chill and hang out.

I haven't heard much about Oasis Hotel (good or bad). Hmmm. My favorites are The Place, Tropico Latino, and a new spot called Casa Colina, which is a B & B built just this year. All have excellent locations.

As far as day hikes between the ferry and Mal Pais.... I would go from Paquera to Cobano. From Cobano, go towards Montezuma. In Montezuma, there is a nice waterfall that requires a ten or twenty minute hike. Bring water shoes (Tevas) and a lunch which you can buy in Cobano. It's best in the morning when the sun is on the water.
There is a site called MalPais.net. It's ok, pretty average, but it does give you an idea of what kind of lodging is available. They won't let you contact the hotels thru the website though. They want you to make reservations thru them.
If you want, you can tell me which accomodations you like and I can tell you the inside scoop. What is your budget anyway?
I hope you have a killer time. Tell 'em that Bennie sent you.

bmyunk--Between Paquera and Malpais, you might check out Curu reserve. It's closer to Paquera.
Closer to Malpais (and a great day hike, especially if you'd like something more strenuous) is the Cabo Blanco Reserve. Get an early start if you plan to do the full hike (there is a short loop). It takes about 2 hours to get over the ridge to the Cabo Blanco beach, time to rest, eat, play, then another 2 hours back.
Best way to get to Cabo Blanco is through Montezuma. It's about 7 km from Montezuma near Cabuya. There is a road to it from Malpais, but we were on it once (looking for a shortcut) and I'd NEVER advise it. One way. . .
It's always interesting to check out Montezuma anyway. The Cabo Blanco Reserve is closed Monday and Tuesday.

Our prices are the same as everyone elses in town. We have the boards you want in stock. "Action Dave" or Randy should be working at the shop when you arrive. Surf is lookin great.
If you hike thru Cabo Blanco Reserve, which is quite nice, make sure to bring lots and lots of water. I have a friend who almost had a heat stroke out there because she only brought one bottle.
Have fun!
