Looking for Snakes in Tulum

Hi All,

My name is Joe and my lovely girlfriend and i will be staying at the Gran Bahia Principe in Tulum from January 25th through the 30th.

Unlike most folks, we are actually reptile lovers who would be ecstatic about seeing as many snakes as possible. I've been scoping the grounds on google earth looking for places that would be good to search and there seems to be ample opportunities. I was wondering if anyone has seen or found any snakes at that particular resort or anywhere in the nearby area? I would love to hear stories and/or see pics!!!

We'll also be staying two nights in the Hip Hotel a little farther south so i'm wondering the same things about that place.

Also, has anyone been to the new golf course across the street from Bahia and can i just drive around the outskirts of it without any kind of special membership???

What I'm really really looking for are places where people might have tossed debris/ junk such as boards, concrete and stuff (old construction materials) because snakes love to hide under that stuff. Has anyone seen any places on the outskirts of that resort where there is some debris i can flip over?

I know this is a strange request for info... but hey, I'm a little strange myself

Thanks so much for any help!!!

Joe

I've never seen a single snake in 5 trips to the area but hundreds of iguanas and geckos.

Good luck!

We were there in March...no snakes. But we were not looking for them, and I would not know where to look.

Good luck!

I didn't see any snakes - but lots of huge iguanas on the ruins in Tulum. Happy hunting!

Herp, we saw a huge beautiful snake at Sky Trek in Arenal/La Fortuna, and I thought of you. You would have loved it. It was solid black and the longest snake I've ever seen, about seven feet. Our guide said it was a snake that eats venomous snakes but is not venomous itself. Any idea what that would be? He said we didn't have this kind in the States. You're the go-to guy for snakes.

Thanks for the well wishes guys!

Volcanogirl - the snake you saw is called a Mussurana (Clelia clelia). I'm super jealous!!! Nice find!

Yes, that's it! The guide said it had a double name. It was just laying out in the open. Thanks for the name - we wanted to find out more about it. It was pretty amazing looking.

I was just at Tulum two days ago and saw a garter snake, but our guide said there had been a coral snake at the entrace to Tulum just a week prior - so you may have some luck!!! The garter snake was actually relaxing on one of the ruins. Have a blast!!!!!
