Lodges with 'habitat' in SW Costa Rica

We're looking for a lodge with good on-site birding and wildlife viewing opportunities either in the Drake Bay area or south of there. We're awaiting word back from Bosque del Cabo and a couple of other lodges in that area. Does not have to be fancy or upscale.....good habitat is the key.

Suggestions will be appreciated.

thanks

Jerry

Excellent birding can be found in the Dos Brazos area west of Puerto Jimenez on the Osa.

Bosque Del Rio Tigre Lodge aprox 1km from Dos Brazos is a wonderful base with dedicated birder owners/guides, trails in private reserve and a beautiful location on the river. Not great for other animals though you might catch sight of somethings resident we missed.

I would say Bosque del Cabo would be a great choice for you if you can get a reservation.

Jerry,
Bosque del Rio Tigre had the greatest selection of birds on our 30 June/July trip this summer. We saw Red-capped and Orange-collared Manakins, Shrike-Vireos, Buffy TuftedCheek, Antbirds, Turquoise Cotinga, and many other great birds. Abram and Liz are excellent hosts and Guides. What a great place.
As Earthtraveler mentioned, Bosque del Cabo has more in the way of animals. We saw all 4 monkey species and great anteater sightings right on the entry road. Either place would be awesome.
Here is a link to some of the birds we saw on our trip:http://www.kodakgallery.com/Slidesho...34t1c&Ux=0

Thanks- yes, Bosque del Rio Tigre sounds great for birds. The concern, as you noted, is the lack of mammals.

I'm a fairly hard core birder but this will be more of a general natural history trip with a bit of beach /ocean time.

thanks

Jerry

How about Casa Corcovado? You can hike right into Corcovado from there and you have the option of snorkeling at Cano Island or Josecito.

I love staying in the little cabin at Bosque del Rio Tigre but animals can be a bit in short supply. I have only seen a tyra, squirrel monkeys, and kinkajoos. In addition to the various frogs, snakes, birds.

I hope you get to go to Bosque. The wildlife there is amazing. They are so lucky to have found such a unique area of the world to live in.

I have stayed further down in the Carate area at three different places. Even hiking in the park didn't come up with much wildlife for us. Two different types of monkeys were about it. We did all of our hiking on our own. Possibly a guide would have helped.

Have you considered Tiskita across the Gulfo Dulce? I am sure Sandy will recommend Playa Nicuesa. We stayed at Esquinas just briefly on our way to Panama and would like to go back there. It has 10 miles of trails! A huge place that bought by Austrians and then donated to Costa Rica to be a reserve. The rooms are very nice and the food good.
