Is there nightlife in Ambergris Caye?
8 of us, couples and singles (no kids) - are looking for a fun, beachy, beautiful, great food place to celebrate a 40th birthday. Is Ambergis Caye an option? If so, any hotels you'd recommend?

Yes, there's night life in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye. Live music some place every night, usually several places. Everything from country western to Punta rock.
There are a couple of late night places, Jaguars and Big Daddy's, but I'm never out late enough to even see them open.
As for hotels, what kind of place are you looking for? Resort, condo, budget? All sorts of options. With eight of you, you could look into renting a house.

Thanks JeanH! Probably all sorts of options...I would love renting a house, are there villas/houses within walking distance (or golf cart ride
to town? And, any resorts, condos or budget places (but not too budget - the whole area actually seems kind of inexpensive) would be great. And both close proximity to beaches and town is ideal. Thanks again!

If you want easy access to town, don't stay very far north of the bridge. The 'road' up there is bad, not really a road at all. You'd need to take water taxis back and forth, which gets to be a hassle with a group, not everyone wants to go to the same place at the same time.
I like Banyan Bay too. Very nice condos, lovely stretch of beach. About 1 1/2 miles south of town. Easy walk during the day, inexpensive cab ride at night.
Cheaper would be Banana Beach, I think they may have four bedroom units. Not much further down the beach than Banyan Bay. Good restaurant there.
Close to town, I'd recommend the Palms, large one and two bedroom condos, next door to Ramon's, which has a lovely stretch of beach.
We used to stay at Belizean Reef when we visited, they're next door to the Palms, also nice condos, but no pool.

You might want to look online or in one of the guidebooks so you can see where things are. You'll be able to see where different resorts are in relationship to town. We were over three miles north of town so getting into San Pedro was a long trip. Very fun in the golf cart (you'll need at least two carts) during the day, but we couldn't just go into San Pedro whenever we wanted. The bridge wasn't built yet and the majority of the water taxis didn't run very late. If you stay fairly close to town and enjoy mellow, smaller restaurants/bars, you'll have a great time.
Belize is extremely beautiful and the people tend to be so sweet. When little kids jumped on the back of our golf cart (when we needed to stop for something) my heart just pounded. Having just been to Jamiaca where our resort wouldn't let us leave without someone with us, I just couldn't imagine that these kids weren't setting us up for something ugly. Naaah, they had just gotten out of school and wanted a ride up to the next street. They'd be back there giggling their brains out and totally trusting us. They were just too cute!
