Is Los Cabos similar to Cancun?

Is Los Cabos similar to Cancun?
We have been to Cancun a few times and would like to try Los Cabos on our next trip. We loved Cancun for the area's cleanliness, the newer hotels, shopping malls, and great restaurants. Would Los Cabos be similar in respect to the aformentioned qualities of Cancun? Thanks for your advice.

I visit both cities every year. While Cabo is not quite as clean and does not have as many large shopping malls, there are plenty of nice hotels (especially along the "corridor", between San Jose Del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas). Cabo also has some great restaurants and night clubs. While there are several great beaches for swimming and snorkeling (Bahia Chileno & Playa Santa Maria), most of the beaches (especially on the Pacific Ocean side) have dangerous currents and are usually not safe for the recreational swimmer. The beaches in Cabo are not as beautiful, in my opinion, as those found in Cancun. If I had to pick my favorite, I'd go with Cancun, but Cabo has it's strong points, which keeps me coming back every year. As you have been to Cancun several times, I think you'd enjoy Cabo, if nothing else, for the change of scenery.

You are right on when you say it is not clean. Last month there were reports of one of the hotels dumping sewage in the Cabo Bay {again}.
Go to Cabo and swim with the turds.
It is a one stop light town. A dump. Tijuana with a Beach at Cancun prices. A desert with an Ocean you can't swim in.
The pollution has been one of the reasons for dissappearing fish, along with the fact the long lineres and the shrimpers have devasted the area.
Do a google on "a dying sea".
Strppers , hookers, pushers, dealers, pimps all ready and available and at your service. don't worry about finding them they'll find you.
A good description would be timeshare Hell. Do a google on timshare fraud Mexico, a must read for anyone thinking of a timeshare presentation.
The town does not have an adequate sewage system and the excess has been known to escape the city grates. Only 45% are hooked up. That's right it turns to dust vermin.
On weekends full of drunks and bingers.

I have never been to Cancun but I just returned from Cabo. My experience (see my posting today re Marquis Los Cabos) was excellent. Stay in the corridor where we stayed. Maybe Cabo is not the best place for sightseers or families needing something constantly to do. Of course, you can golf, fish, snorkel, ride ATVS, horses, etc. but we were too busy relaxing by the pool sipping beer, reading books and enjopying the view. Bottom line, Cabo done right is 5 star.

Just returned to Cabo after a 10 day stay and would have stayed another 10 days if I could. We took our children, ages 8 and 10, and they loved it too. Snorkeling in Playa Santa Maria, took a sunset cruise on the Pirate Buccaneer boat (what a riot that was), went to a Mexican Fiesta at our resort (Villa Del Palmar). It was beautiful weather, the people were just wonderful to us and we are going back next year for two weeks!! Have been to Cozumel and Cancun...liked Conzumel..hate Cancun...Cabo was wonderful...guess it is all in what you like in a vacation. We stayed at the Villa Del Palmar...great resort...lots of activities, met alot of nice people...Give it a try..you will love it!!

We really like Los Cabos. We have been 4 times and are returning again in a few weeks. Downtown San Jose del Cabo has great restaurants that open at 6:00 pm and most have really good seafood dishes. There are beautiful hotels on the Corridor, some are really pricey. The corridor is the 30 mile stetch between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.
We have rented a condo at Las Mananitas (sp) for 3 of our visits in San Jose del Cabo and they are very well maintained. Avoid the time share pushers at the airport that will try to get you to sign up with them the minute you walk through the glass doors. They are very pushy.
The beaches in San Jose are rough, but our one time in Cancun the beaches weren't any better. I don't feel one city/town is any cleaner than the other,except for Cabo San Lucas, I felt it was very dirty and smelly.
I have noticed that the hotels in San Jose del Cabo are filling quicker than 5 years ago so you will have to plan ahead. I disagree with one persons thought on shopping in San Jose del Cabo. They have the usual tourists shops, but there are also some nice shops in the town square and surrounding area in San Jose del Cabo. The have a Costco for food if you plan on renting a condo.
It is fun to go downtown San Jose in the evening as there is always a lot going on.
This going to be a hard decision with all of the other replys re/ the areas.
One last thing, be sure to rent a car at the airport as taxis are very expensive.

We found Cabo to be one of the most over rated/over priced(can you say Maui) places that we have ever visted. That accompanied by the time share crazys make it one of the worst places that we have been to. JMHO

In Maui the tourist air port isnt full of timshare the moment you get off the plane which is unlike Cabo, overrun with timeshare, timeshare Hell is what I call Cabo.
In Maui Rental Cars are affordable and many times can be included in your package.
In Maui $70 a day buys you luxury transportation with Air conditioning not a beater of a Volkswagon Beattle that you get in Cabo.

Not having been to Cabo but researching the area, it's so difficult to discern from these posts what the atmosphere is like. Half of the posters rave about how gorgeous it is, and the other half describe a scene that's only barely a step up from a Calcutta slum. I know different strokes for different folks, but how can there be SUCH stark contrasts in impressions of the same place?

Hey Capt Mike--what I was trying to say was that the prices in Cabo are more Maui-like than Mexico-like. Therefore, I feel it is WAY overpriced. If, I want to pay that kind of money....I would MUCH rather go to someplace fantastic--Maui.

We go to the Cancun area every year and to Cabo every year and Hawaii every year (Yeah,we are beach junkies).
Each differs from the others and has its pluses and minuses but as I reveiw the comments,I think its important to remember that the people who travel also vary in attitudes, tastes, personal experiences, and approaches to travel. I think that one CAN enjoy all of them with a little planning as to where to stay (a bad experience in accomodations can bum one out anywhere). As for timeshare pestering, that happens in all of those places and once past the gauntlet at the Cabo airport or in one's own hotel,one can ignore or refuse them politely or perhaps with humor or creativity...("No but maybe you would like to hear why you should join me in Amway. Lets talk!!" or "I sell them myself,want to talk about technique?"
Unfortunately, the pollution and depositing of trash comes with there being more and more people in these beautiful places...both visitors (whom I have seen leaving trash and stubbing out cigarettes on the beaches in all locations)and the locals,many of whom live on very low wages or live in poverty.
