Is it safe to drive from Leon to San Miguel?

I'm traveling to San Miguel in the next few weeks and need help. I'm flying into Leon and will need to arrange transportation to San Miguel. I know that taking the bus is an option, but I'm tempted to rent a car. I like the flexability of also being able to drive to cities such as Guanajuato and Querétaro and doing so on my own schedule.

The big question is "How safe is it to drive in this part of Mexico?".

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi. I'm an American & have lived in Mexico for 20 yrs. I have never had anything bad happen to me. I know of lots of people who have been held up on the highways, but I know of infinitely more who have never had an incident. You can have crime anywhere here, it's pretty much a gamble, 90% of the time it will be ok, but there's always the off chance. Rental cars here are expensive & not the best in the world, but if you drive on the biggest highway on the map & avoid driving after dark you should be ok. Parking can often be a pain, especially in Guanajuato. You have to park rather far from the historic center which is the only part of these towns worth going to anyway. Might as well take the bus, then the taxi to the hotel, & then walk around the downtown, which is usually easily covered on foot. The bus is fine & probably easier, but it is not unheard of for robbers to board the bus & rob all the passengers. I would go for the bus myself, if I were the tourist.

My best advice would be to hire a car to pick you up at the Leon airport. I believe it should be about $22/person and they will pick you up at the airport and drop you off at your doorstep in San Miguel. You probably will not use a car in San Miguel unless you are staying far away from the jardin and parking can be a pain. As far as visiting other places, you can take a bus, hire a taxi or car, or rent a car in San Miguel. Hola Car Rental is in the Posada San Francisco in the Jardin and we have had good experiences renting from them. The car service we use for airport pick-up is Viajes San Miguel and their e-mail is [email protected]. Make sure you confirm before you leave the States.
