Tourist stip is generally fine if careful
Downtown Cancun can get raunchy risky and dodgy
Buy your own drinks and watch them mixed or better beer
travel.state.gov Mexico Cancun for a heads up
Generally though it is fine if careful with travel buds

I assume (although we never should!) that you are talking about going to Playa del Carmen? If so, it's safe. Just use the same precautions you would in any city. It is a tourist area and they want to keep the tourists safe since it's a great source or their income.

We spent 2 weeks traveling around the Yucatán in June 2010 - never considered setting foot on a resort, honestly. Then our daughter and her husband invited us to share there timeshare at a resort north of Playa del Carmen for a week after Christmas. I'm pretty comfortable in Mexico but the resort was certainly a culture shock! We had a wonderful time with them but 95% of the best memories were "off resort". You can see photos and read my recommendations below. Happy trails!
