Im Leaving soon for Cancun......Any secret places or must sees ?
Im going back to Cancun for the third time and I am so excited. Staying at the Oasis Playa May 14-21. I have seen most of the popular attractions that Cancun has to offer. Just wanted to see if anyone had some stories or some little known places that i should see while I am there? My little known place is a shop across from Coco Bongo in the market area there is an old man who hand rolls cigars outside the shop and sells them for reasonable prices. Let me tell u they smoke very well 2. Well any other little known shops or must sees would be welcome!

Thank You
THe Travelin Jew

Rent a car for the day and travel down highway 307 along the coast and check out the beautiful coastal towns - Playa del Carmen, Akumal, Tankah, etc.
They all have great beach restaurants, most have excellent snorkeling and some little shops.
Or you can take the ferry over to Isla Mujeres for the day.
Either of these options will give you a much truer picture of the Yucatan than you can find in Cancun.
Or you can take the bus or a cab to downtown Cancun to the great shops and restaurants there. (Not the hotel zone, but the actual downtown Cancun area.)

If you haven't done so already, go to Cozumel and rent a scooter for the day. You can ride around most of the island and stop along the way at a few restaurants and do some snorkeling. The back side of the island is absolutely beautiful and very private. My husband and I did this last year. Go early in the day so that you can spend some good time. Good snorkeling too.

If you rent a scooter and go to the east side (back side) of Cozumel, stop at Chen Rio for lunch (also very nice beach). They serve only the seafood they have caught that day in a beautiful, very informal outdoor beach setting.
Enjoy!
Enjoy!

If you're going to rent a car (or you could take a bus tour)go to Tulum and then stop off at Xal-Ja (a real garden of Eden) for some exquisite snorkeling in a warm water lagoon with cold water springs shooting up every so often. Wonderful rock formations in the water allow flourescent fish to swim in and out of the fissures.

On our last visit, we didn't have time for Chitzen Itza nor Tulum, but we wanted to see some ruins, and someone directed us to Ruinas del Rey. Supposedly the largest ruin in Cancun, right at Km 17. Pay the customary $2-3 entrance fee, but Do Not let them charge you $10pp for the guided tour. Not worth it. The whole thing takes an hour or less to walk around, take photos, chase the many resident iguanas, etc.

A few more (I'm having fun reliving our trip last yr)...this isn't much of a secret...it's listed in all of the guidebooks, but we had a WONDERFUL lunch (dinner is offered, too) at La Habichuela in downtown. Take the 50 cent bus into town and walk from the shopping district. The address is Margaritas 25 and it's just a couple blocks off the mail drag. I remember seeing a sign. English-speaking, cute atmosphere and great food. The other fun eating adventure we had was at Lorenzillo's (Km 10.5). It's a waterfront restaurant (on the lagoon side). There's a retaining pond, of sorts, in front of the restaurant, and the pond has a resident croc (or perhaps gator). A guy from Lorenzillo's is often out there at dinnertime feeding him chicken fryer quarters so he's pretty visible and it's quite a show.

Please DO NOT rent a scooter on Cozumel or in the Cancun area.
I have been going to Cozumel every year for 10 years and in the last few years have seen a serious/fatal accident involving scooters and tourists on every single trip.
We just got back this morning from 3 weeks in Mexico, and had to witness yet another couple sitting by the side of the road on Cozumel with neck collars on covered with cuts, scrapes and bruises from losing it on their scooter.
Last year we were unfortunate enough to see a girl killed on one when she fell off the back and slammed her skull (no helmet) into the pavement. Her boyfriend stood over her crying.
It only costs an extra $20 to get a car, and it's much safer.
The taxi drivers told us there were 3 fatal accidents in April alone.
Once you get on the island and see the way the people drive, I hope you'll change your mind.
Get a Jeep or Bug, drop the top, and have a great time!
