Hotel Vistamar and others on the Isla Mujeres
Has anyone ever stayed at the Hotel Vistamar on Isla Mujeres? How about the Hotel Francis Arlene or Hotel D'Gomar or Hotel Belmar? We are planning a trip for the 2nd week in June and want to stay at an inexpensive hotel yet want it to be nice, clean, safe...Any help would be appreciated!

We stayed at the Belmar for a week in October 1998. I was really happy with the hotel. We had room 11, I think, which had a king sized bed, nicely tiled bathroom, ceiling fan PLUS the quietest air conditioning you could ever ask for, small table & chairs in the room. We overlooked the street with french doors, also the same over the restaurant. I would definitely stay there again. I think we paid less than $25 US / night which I thought was a good deal. The restaurant doesn't open until later in the morning, and it closes early enough in the evening, so noise wasn't a problem. We also had TV in the room, which I wouldn't have thought we'd use - unfortunately we had some rain - a couple of days it was torrential, so we actually appreciated the TV. There was a good restaurant across the street for breakfast. Also ate at Pizza Rolandi (the restaurant below the hotel) a few times - it was great.

Kelly,
Of the four you have inquired about, the Francis Arlene would be my first choice (a little quieter, small fridge & coffee maker in room, most rooms have balconies, nice people) with the Belmar a not too distant second. This winter both were in the $45-55USD/double range but should be about $35-45USD in June. D'Gomar is a little out of the way and, although I've never stayed there, seems to lack character. The Vistalmar is a little noisier and, although $25-30USD/double, not as good a value as the Francis Arlene.

If you go on the message board at www.isla-mujeres.net there are lots of reviews of these hotels (you can do a search using the hotel names).

Mark, you probably don't need a reservation in June for the Belmar, but you never know. When we went in October 98, I did make a reservation over the internet. I don't have the e-mail address, but I just now did a search and found this site - http://www.cancun.com/dining/rolandi/rolahot.stm for them. As I said in my earlier note, I think we had room 11
and we were really pleased with it.

be aware that Vista Del Mar has done a major upgrade on facilities to include phone, cable Tv and refrigerators., The prices have went up to $40 for high season which is still not too bad. It will be interesting to see how this goes over with the regulars. There is still the Carmelina accross the street from Frances Arlene--they will satisfy those who want just the basics --not ocean view thou. dan and ginny
